Interesting/decent film remakes
Ahoy all,
I've started to do some film writing of late and posting it on a very disorganised Tumblr account I started with a mate of mine who posts his reviews up there. Since he's doing more formal reviews, I've been trying to do some longer pieces and find different angles to look in to. So I'm currently writing a dissection of "A Tale Of Two Sisters" and its remake "The Uninvited", which is coming out as a very one-sided examination of why one is a fascinating, eerie genre film and the other is just pretty fucking terrible.
What I'd like to do, to counter-balance this, is start right away on another comparison piece where the disparity between a great original and a shoddy knock-off facsimilie is less marked, where the remake either held up on its own merits or as an interesting companion piece because of its treatment of the original concept. So I'd very much like to hear any suggestions and general discussion on the merits of remaking films. What has been your favourite film remake? Does it count as a remake if both movies come from the same original source material (novels etc.)? Is remaking an existing film inherently less valid or worthy than adapting material from another source?
Thanking kindly.
