It's all bollocks right?
but it's the first film in about 10 years that i actively want to see
It just kind of feels that if Phoenix and Affleck are staging a massive stunt then they'll be taking the piss out of the audience. I don't want to feel mocked when I go the cinema, I get enough of that everywhere else.
People aren’t allowed to go mental these days without everyone else going “He’s just trolling”. I hope that he has gone nuts, because it’s been a while since someone’s gone proper Charles Manson. Even if some of the scenes are staged, nutjobs can still make up such events as fiction.
trollin' Paulas Mam
EYE EE EIGHT
possibly funny bollocks though. I might watch it.
he's asleep or something ?
It's very odd. The thing is, with Borat for example, the joke is on the people he interviews, with the audience in on it. Here, if it is a joke, he's still keeping the audience on the outside, which he would have had to do originally for all the Letterman stuff, but what benefit does it serve keeping it up? Just building hype for the box office I guess.
If anything, the audience should be the prime victims as they’re the ones who have invested in it and know what they're getting into. It’s cuntier to target innocent bystanders, as it were. At least if this film is a huge joke, then everyone is on the same level and the only people in on it are the people who made the film. Also, it’s not so much playing a trick on the audience – he’s more just making a fool of himself. If he holds a press conference and announces “LOL – made you think!” then it’d have zero impact at all.
A joke that only the filmmakers are in on seems like a pretty redundant joke. Yes, it might make me think about "meta" filmmaking, the nature of celebrity, image vs reality etc etc, but if all my energy is taken up with thinking "What the fuck is really going on?" it's all going to be a bit of a waste.
It's redundant. And shit.
...masquerading as a Fluxus inspired conceit brimming with the avant-garde.
''This is living art...this is ANTI-art'' they will say....but it actually isn't.
I blame Dash Snow.
Surely most people stopped bothering with the Phoenix charade post-Letterman, when the reaction was less "omg he's nuts!!!" than "meh, Crispin Glover wasn't making a docu-film at the time he did this".
