Specifically: are there different 'world championships', like the different belts in boxing, or just this one?
Basically, it depends what style you're doing, and how far advanced you are.
there's loads of tournaments in the UK (in the year running up to first dan (black belt) you have to do lots of competitions), and before you start hitting the tournament circuit, I'd imagine that you'd have to be at least a third dan and at least looking at other styles, prob aikido or someat.
tournaments are good fun, if a bit knackering.
karate is not in the olympics and as such has many different "major championships". i beleive the worlds is one of them.
why do i know this? because the girl that i work with is the world karate champion for her weight/division/whatever. she's just been to a championships for martial arts where the top 8 athletes for your discipline fight it out for the gold medal. it was held in the olympic arena in beijing:
what else do you want to know?
as it says in this article: http://is.gd/f0FEk
Because I'm having trouble finding any evidence. Like, the bio on his website claims he was "Voted Most Outstanding Competitor at the world championships in Canada" – except that wiki article doesn't mention a world championship in Canada.
That'd be amazing, cheers.
and says theres a lot of these phoneys around.
he could be world champion of 'something' she says, but nothing to do with the WKF, who are the ruling body of the world championshps.
His CV does look suspiciously impressive: http://is.gd/f0J8P
There's a guy in (or near?) Ely who keeps winning the European Karate Championships, but he's about 50. Seems unlikely, but what the hell do I know?
i doubt he's the champion tho.
Nice pic of him with graham gooch too.
and they run the Karate World Championships. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Karate_Federation
The International Traditional Karate Federation do still exist (they were meant to merge into the WKF back in the early 1990s, but didn't): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Traditional_Karate_Federation
I can only find info on them running European Championships, not World ones.
Pft. "Research" indeed.
