## Can you do this Grade 5 simple maths question?

"This is not a trick question. This is a real math problem so don't say that a bus has no legs. And don't include a bus driver!

Read carefully:

There are 7 girls in a bus.

Each girl has 7 backpacks.

In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.

For every big cat there are 7 little cats.

Question: How many legs are there in the bus? Please show working."

- - - - - - - - -

If you too have had this on email recently, don't ruin it, YEAH?!?!?

I got it right first time, so it's not that hard. Yup, still got it...

"My mathematics brings all the girls to the yard..."

## If one of those girls puts one of those cats in the bin

there'll be trouble. cruel fuckers.

## 2y = a(a) + ((y - (5x - x/y)))

Solve for x.

How many legs does a cat have again?

## 11025

yeah?

## How'd you get that?

## oh balls

I added the backpack number instead of the girls legs number at the end

:(

stupid chris

## 5 x 7 =35

So you missed two backpacks in any case.

## nope

49 - 14 = 35

as I added the backpack number not the girls legs

SEE?

## What the fuck is "Grade 5"?

## a ballet/music grade.

## theres the chair legs for the seats right?

and the driver. and anyone who might be on the bloody bus

## Hmm

If it's not a trick question then

7x2 legs on the girls = 14

7x7 = 49 backpacks.

7x49 = 343 (not using a calculator)

So 343 big cats = 1372 legs on big cats

343 x 7 = may have to use a calculator: 2401

x 4 = 9604 legs on small cats.

9604 + 1372 + 14 = 10990 legs.

Now, what's the trick for the real answer?

## Fuck off. You didn't use a calculator for 7*49?

You're a modern day Laplace.

111*110001=101010111

## 7 x 4 = 28 and 7 x 9 = 63.

It's not my fault if your times tables are rubbish.

## 7*50=350

-9=343

## Oh dear

## You are to mental arithmetic what Les Dawson was to piano playing

## Trumpet trying to ride on my coattails, I see.

## I would but your cheapo sub £1250 coat tails just rip straight off in my hands

## Oh very nice. :D

## That's what I thought it was

But my friend tells me I now got it wrong after all. She's given me the right answer though. However I prefer my version.

## So you failed first time.

Please post the full working for the correct answer then.

## Well, ALLEGEDLY:

If you do it for 1 backpack then the rest. so:

For one backpack:

You have 8 cats (7 little cats per 1 big cat) 7 +1 = 8 x this by 7 = 56, then x 4 (legs) = 224 (this is number of legs for 1 backpack)

Then

X 7 (for 7 packs per girl)

= 1,568 + 2 legs for the 1 girl.

THEN x 7 (for the 7 girls)

= 10,976

## .....er....

1568 + 2 (for the girls legs) = 1570

1570 * 7 = 10990

## ha

class

## Oh, I did a marckee.

Whups.

Anyway, the conclusion is that vamos knows a girl who's crap at maths but more worryingly, he trusts her opinion on maths.

## Um, that's just wrong. 1568 + 2 = 1570

so the answer can't possibly end in anything but a 0. 10990.

## Oh yeah

That's not right either. We must be.

## Look you bugger, can you just post the 'right' answer

because 10990 is all I can find on the web.

## Who the fuck is driving the bus?

## And why are these kids putting cats in their backpacks?

## a little cat

## something about a pussy and a gear stick

## A good question.

This is a fucking bleak scenario.

An out of control careening bus with no driver ("cars on fire and there's no driver at the wheel and the...")

Onboard are seven screaming girls, desperately clinging to their seats and at the same time trying to stop their various cats from killing each other within the sacks.

It would make a good David Lynch film.

## first sentence in the op: don't include the driver.

## 1582?

## 7 girls with 2 legs = 14

49 big cats with 4 legs = 196

343 little cats with 4 legs = 1372

14 + 196 + 1372 = 1582

## I got this too

we can either be smug, or retarded, together

## hmm, looks like we're both retarded

what kind of weirdo carries 7 backpacks on a bus.

and how big is this bus? sounds more like noah's ark with all these cats on board!!! <------COMEDY!!

## MMMNNNGGGHHH

## I have a crayon stuck up my nose :(

## Balls, didn't see the 'each girl has SEVEN backpacks'

Thought they only had one each.

## You're failing at at least two of the three Rs right now.

## All three, perhaps

Typing does not equal riting.

## Each girl has 7 backpacks?

What the fuck is this shit

## hmm...

7 + (7x7x4) + (7x7x7x4) = 7 + 196 + 1372 = 1575

## One legged girls?

## yeah, see below.

## they make the rockin' world go round

## good work

## hang on, I did that wrong and didn't count the backpacks.

(7x2) + (7x7x7x4) + (7x7x7x7x4) = 14 + 1372 + 9604 = 10,990

## Yeah. Late to the party as usual.

You and your love of monopodular girls.

## i'm afraid i'm going to make a bad post. ready?

## He who smelt it dealt it...

## I'm still braced. Can you get on with it?

## Has anybody else assumed that these girls are Japanese?

## Pocketmouse to thread!

## 10988

## 10990*

put 9602 down instead of 9604 for some reason.

## But what does a bus have to do with anything?

Why not 'an otherwise empty room' or whatever?

## why the fuck would each girl have seven backpacks?

>=(

## A HA! Cats have paws!

so the answer is 14!

## DURAN DURAN! You're an idiot.

## :D

You just reached your posting apex. You may as well give up now.

## SPANDAU BALLET! Bite me!

## what about the 4584 fleas on each of the cats ?

## What enormous backpacks these girls have.

## makes the rockin world go round

so I've heard.

## Mathsmash II: Electric Boogaloo.

## My parents have a cat with three legs.

Does this help?

## How many cats do they have?

And how many have three legs?

This should give us an accurate cat with 3 legs versus cats with 4 legs ratio that Theo can plug into his formula. The arse.

## 1 cat in total

which means that, accepting my parents' house as a representative sample, all cats have 3 legs.

My Dad is actually, believe it or not, a statistician. He loves saying that my cat has 'more than the average number of legs'. Tee hee.

## What is he talking about? Please explain

Then, even if this turns out to be correct, tell him to get a new joke.

## probably a shitload

of <3 legged cats dragging the average down. I mean that's the sort of thing a statistician knows.

What does a statistician do all day apart from counting cat legs?

## ^this

Just like we have more than the average number of limbs.

## Speak for yourself.

## His cat has three legs.

Even if every other cat has 4 legs, the average (mean) no. of legs per cat will still be 3.9999999999999999999999999999999 or thereabouts. Basically you never get 5 legged cats, but you occasionally get 3 legged ones, so the average is always a shade under 4.

His other joke is about having his head in the oven, his feet in the freezer and being happy on average. It's worse.

## to be clear (sorry!)

MY cat has 4 legs.

His cat has 3 legs.

THerefore my cat has more than the average no. of legs. Not his. MINE. MY cat. He's a tabby/white cat. He's lovely.

## That clears it up

Still, tell him to get a new joke.

## So your dad thinks 3 > 3.9999999999999??

He's possibly the worst statistician ever.

## no MY CAT - my 4 legged cat - has more than the average number of legs.

His cat - the 3 legged one - has less than the average number.

Mathematically:

C(d) < C(m) < C(t_e)

Where C is number of Cat legs

D is Dad

M is mean

t_e you can work out.

## It's okay, I understand.

There are far more cats with 3 legs (or 2, or 1), than there are with 5 legs.

Therefore the average number of legs is a shade under 4.

## he's only counting cats and humans then ? ok.

## 10,990

7x2 = 14 girls' legs

7girls x 7 backpacks x 7 big cats x 4 = 1372 big cats' legs

7girls x 7 backpacks x 7 big cats x 7 little cats x 4 = 9604 little cats' legs

so yeah: 10,990

## Smashy smashy? I'm not sure

## BROS! Nor I

## 14!

It doesn't say the backpacks are on the bus.

## This is true.

Maybe the backpacks are wild, roaming the wilderness. The lesser-spotted backpack, hiding in the savannah avoiding the big cats and assorted little cat hanger ons.

## 1386

the small cats are not on the bus

## I got 10,990

7x7 = 49

49x7 = 343

343x7 = 2,401

(7x2)+(343x4)+(2401x4) = 10,990
