Manchester United look impressive in beating a fair looking Newcastle side 3-0 to open their Premier League campaign. Early suggestions are that Newcastle should have plenty to stay up.

Five French players face a FFF hearing today. Evra, Anelka, Abidal, Ribery and Toulalon those involved.

Spurs kick off their first Champions League campaign in Switzerland this evening.

Brad Jones looks likely to join Liverpool. He's always looked a bit bobbins whenever I've seen him. Is Cavalieri on his way out?

Matt Derbyshire signs for Birmingham on loan. I think he's scored quite well in Greece for Olympiakos.

Liverpool won't contest Joe Cole's red card. Makes a nice change.

The Indian fella bidding for Blackburn wants a quick sale so that he can hand Big Sam a load of wonga to splurge. I love the word splurge.

Was noch?

  • I'd imagine Jones is being signed because he qualifies as home-grown

and Cavalieri doesn't. Same reason Chelsea are allegedly tracking Begovic.

Neymar will apparently make his decicion on whether or not stay at Santos or move to Chelsea today.

    • Ah yeah,

      that'd make sense.

  • I was impressed by Routledge.

    Jordan_229_2 | 17 Aug '10, 10:36 | X
    • He's one of those players

that I've always thought should have made a bit more of his talent than he has so far. Really hope he can have a good season this time around at Newcastle.

      htbetween29and30 @Jordan_229_2 | 17 Aug '10, 10:50 | X
  • When did clubs in The Big League actually find out about the implementation of this homegrown/25 player thing?

    bamos | 17 Aug '10, 10:52 | X
    • They voted for it in May 2009.

      colinzealuk @bamos | 17 Aug '10, 10:54 | X
      • And they knew it was coming in for the start of this year?

Because things like Chelsea being rumoured to be stepping in for Begovic - a man who only moved in February for £3million to another club - seems a bit like terrible planning on their part.

        bamos @colinzealuk | 17 Aug '10, 10:57 | X
        • Yep.

          colinzealuk @bamos | 17 Aug '10, 10:59 | X
        • I agree it's terrible

but not for the same reason. It's terrible 'cos it's taken them this long to realise that Turnbull and Hilario are one numpty away from a Three Stooges tribute act.

          DanielKelly @bamos | 17 Aug '10, 10:59 | X
          • Wasn't that why Turnball

            was originally signed last year?

Should Liverpool be concerned that he was keeping Brad Jones out of the Boro side 18 months ago?

            htbetween29and30 @DanielKelly | 17 Aug '10, 11:02 | X
            • Yes

I'd imagine it was a big part of why Turnbull was signed, yes. Unsurpursingly, the club seem to have arrived at the conclusion he (and Hilario) are shit. I don't think the Begovic talk is poor planning in terms of the 25-man squad, as Chelsea already comply with it.

              DanielKelly @htbetween29and30 | 17 Aug '10, 11:09 | X
              • Yeah,

it does seem to be more a case of improving what they already have. Begovic ought to stay at Stoke though. It won't be long before Sorensen starts chucking them in his own net. He'll not dislodge Cech as Chelsea number 1.

  • Today's transfer rumours

Jermaine Jenas (Spurs) to Juventus, AC Milan, Sampdoria or Galatasaray
Moussa Dembele (AZ) to Birmingham or Fulham
    Chris Basham (Bolton) to Blackpool
    Thiago Alcantara (Barcelona) to Bolton
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Barcelona) to Man City
    Andre-Pierre Gignac (Toulouse) to Liverpool
    Leroy Fer (Feijenoord) to Newcastle
    Hugo Rodallega (Wigan) to Stoke
Valon Behrami (West Ham) to AS Roma
Charles N'Zogbia (Wigan) to Birmingham, Marseille, Sunderland or Stoke
Peter Odemwingie (Lokomotiv Moscow) to West Brom

Their goal difference is already a bit shit.

  • We've signed a Swedish chap called Daniel Majstorovi? from AEK Athens

He's 33 so should provide the experience in the centre of defence that we badly need.

He scored almost 30 goals in two seasons at Basle so hopefully he can chip in with 5 - 10 this season for us.

Oh and we got him for nothing as AEK terminated his contract because they are in serious financial difficultly.

Seems like a cracking piece of business by Lennon.

    • Bellamy however doesn't seem to be coming north.

“We couldn't have done any more,” Lawwell told the Scottish Sun. “We agreed a deal with Manchester City and we had been talking to Craig for over a week.

“But at the end of the day, if you lose out to someone who wants to go home there's nothing you can do about it.”

Sounds like he's joining Cardiff City then.

He's more of a nice to have that a need to have though.

We're rumours to be in for Shay Given and Vladimir Weiss as well.

I'm pretty confident Weiss will sign for us as he'd "love to sign for Celtic."

      Fingers crossed!

Can't see Given signing unless Man City refuse to let him go to a rival.

    • I'm a bit disappointed to see him go to Madrid.

One of the things I liked about Germany in the World Cup was how they seemed to be the antithesis of the underperforming 'stars' littering the other teams.
I really hoped that they'd all stay in Germany until 2014 and then storm the next world cup.

      amnuck @Antpocalypsenow | 17 Aug '10, 15:55 | X
    • I'm no United fan by any means

but it would have been great to see him walk straight into a top Premiership side, as he doubtless would have done, and really make a difference to the team.

Instead, he'll get 10 games a year against the likes of Almeria and Levante before ironically losing out on the title yet again to the Spanish national team.

      The circle of life continues...

      Smileadelic @Antpocalypsenow | 17 Aug '10, 16:48 | X

I think it's a great one, for him at least. Germany's midfield was a sum of it's parts. Going to the same club as Khedira is astute and I'd wager they'll both establish themselves as first eleven players.

  • Motherwell are threating to issue a winding-up order to Cardiff because they still haven't paid the £175,000 the owe for Paul Quinn.

    Quite right too.

If they can afford Bellamy, they can afford to pay what they've agreed for Quinn.

Clearly Cardiff - and everyone associated with them - are arseholes after all.

    blaaast | 17 Aug '10, 15:48 | X
    • I've seen somewhere today

suggestions that they're about to be hit with another transfer embargo. Clearly they're not going to be covering all of Bellamy's wages, but even a fraction of them when they owe money for other players isn't right.

      htbetween29and30 @blaaast | 17 Aug '10, 15:50 | X
      • Pretty much yeah.

They originally agreed to pay for Quinn in monthly installments - fair enough, clubs do this all the time.

However, the January payment wasn't received and neither has any subsequent payments.

Motherwell are deadly serious too: ""We have given Cardiff every chance to do the right thing.

The board now believe that Cardiff’s position is untenable given their activity in the transfer market acquiring Jason Koumas, Tom Heaton, Danny Drinkwater, Seyi Olofinjana, Martin John and today, the loan signing of Manchester City’s Craig Bellamy.

Given all these circumstances and with legal and moral weight behind us, Motherwell FC have no option but to immediately pursue all legal routes to ensure this significant sum paid to us as quickly as possible.

These may include issuing a winding up order, arresting assets or physically sending bailiffs to their ground on match day to take possession of cash. Every option will be fully considered and implemented as soon as possible."

        Pay up Cardiff!

        blaaast @htbetween29and30 | 17 Aug '10, 16:00 | X
        • Good for Motherwell...

Quite frankly, I hope Craig Brown goes and shits in the centre circle of Cardiff's new ground. How they can justify marquee signings like Bellamy when they've been reneging on various payments is completely beyond me.

It wouldn't surprise me if City wouldn't let him go to a 'rival' club, and so he decided that he'd rather just play for his local team, probably on a reduced wage (albeit City still paying a decent chunk) instead of for someone in the bottom half of the Premier League.

It was really Pav and Defoe :0

              quakerstoy @Zapsta | 17 Aug '10, 23:26 | X
              • I would have said Defoe, actually

He worked hard. And Pavlyuchenko probably ran 2 miles just chasing down his own loose touches.

Gio was one of the few players to come out of the first half with anything approaching credit, but then in the second half, when he really would have got a few chances to have an impact, he faded quite significantly. I don't think the formation really suits him - too often (and in the 15 minutes or so he was on the pitch against City as well) he was picking up the ball way too deep. I don't want him running the length of the pitch and getting tired out by the time he's anywhere near the opposition goal; I want him trying to work his magic in and around the box.

                Zapsta @quakerstoy | 17 Aug '10, 23:37 | X

worst performance i can remember by spurs in a long long time

        • Bale wasn't bad second half

          Didn't really notice Kranjcar.
Palacios, Bassong and Dawson were so bad first half. It was like the start of 2007-8 when Kaboul and Dawson were playing.

          • kranc and huddlestone really added some much needed composure

            the_dazzled @quakerstoy | 18 Aug '10, 00:42 | X
      • Not really

We had much more possession, more shots on target, more shots, more corners and squandered plenty of chances.
You could tell our season hasn't really started yet and the plastic couldn't have helped.

        quakerstoy @buynikeshoes_09 | 17 Aug '10, 23:22 | X
        • they were turd -

          harru @quakerstoy | 17 Aug '10, 23:24 | X
          • The first 30 minutes was like watching a bunch of fat blokes trying to play football

Realisticly, they did to us what we should have done to City.
Second half we still couldn't defend, but at least a few of them could control it.
I'm suprised at how well we played against City, this must have been the worst pre-season ever.

            quakerstoy @harru | 17 Aug '10, 23:29 | X
            • Tottenham were absolute, total, unarguable shite in the first half

The Bassong goal came completely out of the blue. They were mauled, it should have been 4 before the 1st Spurs goal.

Second half, Young Boys squandered plenty of chances to make it 4,5-1. They had better build-up play, they put more pressure on the ball, they were faster, they played better as a unit.

Tottenham were outplayed. The margin should have been 2 or 3.

              Jambo31 @quakerstoy | 17 Aug '10, 23:32 | X
        • We were shit.

Even so, those stats are true and our best chances did not materialise as shots because some fool fell over or scuffed it instead.

          quakerstoy @buynikeshoes_09 | 17 Aug '10, 23:31 | X
          • Spurs were shite

but Young Boys (LOL, still) looked pretty nifty and didnt deserve the patronising they got from the commentators, though I guess it's to be expected, some great diagonals, every cross was decent, great through-ball for I think the third goal and another 2 chances which should have been in.
