the Guardian today says that petanque is the new cool thing to do. Does anyone play it?
absolutely numpties playing it.
I've had a game before, it's alright as a one off but anything more than that is a bit much.
the pub near where I grew up had a sandpit where you could play it - used to go there all the time, it was great.
Also, petanque or boules?
that petanque is a particular form of boules. with a shorter playing piste, and you stand still to throw the ball rather than taking 3 paces up.
i ALSO learnt that some guy in some Shoreditch band organises "guerilla petanque" competitions in East London. *snigger*
All things aside, it looks like quite a fun thing to play: strategic, backstabbing and involving imbibing lots of alcohol.
PETANQUE: HOW IT GOT COOL AGAIN!!!
THERE'S A PHOTO OF SOMEONE FROM DAWSON'S CREEK PLAYING IT.
There goes another quid down the drain.
But deserving of a two-page fucking article about it's ""coolness""? Fuck off.
I'm going to send in a two-page article about how Risk and Stratego are COOL again. If they don't publish it I'm burning the place down.
I can't believe I read the whole thing either; I was expecting an article about old French geezers standing around drinking and chatting, not East London types playing guerilla petanque at Field Day :(:(:(:(:(:(
they'll turn it into a photoblog starring Tanya Gold.
great fun. also see all the old boys in the little village squares playing it. very french.
I recommend playing it in the evening, whilst imbibing copious numbers of those little kronenbourg stubby bottles.
I forgets and someone was talking about this over there earlier.
Hahaha. ZING! And relax...
Oh, hi there nurse, is it medication time again?
You're having a very fashionably French summer.
wish i could actually afford to GO TO FRANCE.
Croquet is the sport of kings.
Is guerilla petanque replacing bicycle polo as the sport of the East London hispter?
It was pretty exciting, and I won.
We then played mallet football. Or POLO ON LEGS WITH A FLOATY BALL, for the uncouth. That was more exciting.
they had a sports feature on CROLF, which is new craze in the west country: a cross between golf and croquet.
You stop watching that crap, I'll stop buying the Guardian permanently rather than intermittently as I've started doing now.
It'll be good for both of us.
One of main petanque hotspots is REALLY near my house!!!!! It's about time we had some glamour round here.
next to no-one is going to pay for an online version of newspapers when actual general news alone has never been a profitable thing, whatever the format, and shit like this is touted as "distinctive editorial providing added value" or somesuch guff.
in the rum bar, but croquet ftw.
In the grand final I was storming away, only to hit the pin before it was time to and getting disqualified
I was absolutely devastated
it's a good beach game.
as Brighton seafront has got a couple of petanque areas. More recently we've moved onto Kubb though ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubb ).
