...the new bbc news is fucking horrid
The mobile version seems to be knackered. Just shows the main BBC page and wont follow the link into the news section.
a lot of of the text isn't being picked up so comes out as gobbledeegook

Try selecting the block of text in question, right clicking and doing 'inspect element'.
You'll find if you click into the various bits of the style sheet in the resulting window you can uncheck them. Maybe that will tell you?
Does it happen in any other browsers?

The Times' new site is superb. Newspapers should follow their suit and make a bit of business out of online news. Why give it away?
Because general news content (on paper or internet) is, always has been, and probably always will be, a loss leader. That's why.
