After winning 24-22 against Bogdanovic in seond round of qualification, he's 22-22 against Isner...
the winner of a match that is currently 15-14 in the fifth. Madness.
Will it end ?
Will it be stopped by the night again ?
"They would definitely have to stop at 100 because it would clock the scoreboard, so the end is in sight."
can't tell if that's a joke or not. I hope it is, I want this to go on forever...
I'm tired watching these guys!
He was stuck at 78 for a long time (for him...)
These two cats should be having lunch with the Queen tomorrow!
Or maybe both if they don't manage to finish this today !
...from before the invention of the tie-break...
Unbelievable moment !
that's just cruel
a 6'9" American and an Ian Bell lookalike playing the longest match in tennis history. I can't even imagine playing tennis for 4 hours, let alone 8.
6.25pm: The scoreboard is barely visible through the grass and weeds and trails of Spanish moss. It shows that John Isner and Nicolas Mahut are locked at 37 games each in the final set.
I'm wondering if maybe an angel will come and set them free. Is this too much to ask? Just one slender angel, with white wings and a wise smile, to tell them that's it's all right, they have suffered enough and that they are now being recalled. The angel could hug them and kiss their brows and invite them to lay their rackets gently on the grass. And then they could all ascend to heaven together. John Isner, Nicolas Mahut and the kind angel that saved them.
Hopefully it's a good sign...
Amazingly Mahut only had one break point in the whole game...
than any of the french football team players in a week...
now 50-50 all! Don't know either guy, but you'd have to feel devastated for whoever ends up losing this..
but i'm glued to the screen...surely this can't go on much longer?
Have they had a break, even a loo break at all?
has now had more games than the previous longest match in Wimbledon history pre-tiebreakers had in total.
amazing stuff. I love sport. Weird that Mahut looked like he wanted to stop and Isler wanted to continue, when Isler had looked just about dead on his feet and Mahut remarkably bright.
and the switched round at halftime... and I'm half Kraut.
actually gave them a standing ovation. my gf looked at me funny, but i dont give a shit. phenomenal.
"The fifth set alone is longer than any other match ever in history, in both games played and time"
won't have to play his second round today.
But what if they can't finish it ?
(yes I know its not the rules to have a last set tie-break but are they just hoping one of them will die?)
this is a true one-off.
creates brilliant drama, and is one of the things that makes winning or even progressing in a Grand Slam the acheivement it is. This sort of thing will probably never happen again.
but surely there should be a cut off point if it drags on, say 20 games then a tie-break, otherwise this tedious shit happens.
because he can't lift his arm. All seems a bit "historic" but without any gain for the two guys involved.. Can't imagine they're happy with it.
What's more can they hope for ?
"Not before 1530"
Hope it's enough...
More Hemingway than sport. Update thread-title to include Isner please.
Why do I have to be at my stinking work?
as if they need to really. I think 'refit limbs' would be more appropriate
Can we just raise a toast to Ronald McIntosh? Every aspiring commentator's dream.
I saw about 38 games of this yesterday - absolutely wondrous it was too. What a lot of people haven't said is that there were so very many great points where the ball was returned successfully - ball-striking, variation of striking and consistency of finding winners were astounding in the circumstances
68 games or so
the stadium from my window, I can actually see the replays on the big screen. Not right is it.
Awful meetings with nasty women whilst a ODI goes on, an epic Wimbledon battle and WC... I've got to go and sort out the bleedin' wedding list after work as well.
going to meet with someone called Kylie. I imagine she's going to be 12.
feels like a million bucks!!!
