Dicko [Edit] [Delete] 7 replies 18:29, 17 June '10

hi, i really want to improve my drawing abilities, especially with things like buildings and other architecture. but anything would be great. i would say i have a very basic drawing ability, and really really SUCK at perspective, so any tips/links you have would be excellent. also anything about digital art too! throw it all in there.

  • Read...

"The elements of drawing" by John Ruskin.

also look at the spaces between things and relationships between certain points.

Well, you can start practising your perspective, can't you?

    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds | Identify the object that serves as the focal point for your image - could be a distant mountain, or a dog pissing on a lampost in the foreground. Build the rest of the scene around that object.

    - http://tinyurl.com/2wjbtcb | Tangents: where lines from one object appear to follow on into another. Kissing Elements: Two shapes that juuust touch. Both are the drawing equivalentofasentencewithoutpunctuationitsreallyconfusinginnit. Avoid by planning out in advance where you're going to put stuff. Objects in your image should either be well apart or clearly overlapped.

    - Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance: It's tempting to jump straight in with detail. Don't. Block out your scene with rough shapes. Add rough details to those shapes. Then add detail to the detail, and so on. This way, you won't get an hour into your masterpiece and find a massive mistake you can't correct because it's surrounding by stuff you want to keep.

That's all I can be bothered with right now.

  • what are really useful are deviantart.com tutorials

done by artists themselves. in the deviantart search tool, search "perspective tutorial" for example, filter it to show the most popular results of all time and you should come out with loads of very useful tips
