Plus some politicians (Prescott, Howard, Paisley, John Reid, John Hutton, Paul Boateng), but... Floella Benjamin!
I guess its to be very famous at something (as long as its not just being famous for getting your bits out)
Fact of the day: I was at the same wedding as Paul Boateng a year or two back. Didn't speak to him though.
It's kind of our thing.
from banging on about being working class at long last?
No, me neither.
and a degree in economics and economic history.
Most people who have dealt with him have said that he's actually smarter and more eloquent than most of those on the front benches of both major parties.
He had a reputation as a fearsome debater, and was considered one of the most intellectual politicians in the House.
Then he got into power and, well, we all saw how the media saw an easy scapegoat. The man's a clumsy chump at times, no mistake.
is there some sort of official guidance telling us what the guidelines are on who is made a peer or given honours?
Sometimes they're also placed there if their expertise is seen as valuable in the law-making process.
get to help in law making.........
I suppose im thinking of jeffrey archer here.
It must be difficult to establish this, it is so subjective. Is it meant to be the perception according to the PM, the queen? a commons committee? It seems a bit random to me.....OK fair enough when an athlete wins a gold medal for england or wales etc in the olympics then that is not really going to be disputed, i mean they are winning it for themselves for and for their country...and just the glory (cos they are amateurs)
But i csnt see how they pick the tv celebs etc......(I mean i like floella, but).
Im also a bit peeved that so many politicions get honoured in that case as that means there is an essential assumption that MOST them are doing a great srvice to our country, and many of the awards (i am sure) would be hotly disputed by many (the people would not dispute an olympic gold medal winner though)
I realise that they occasionally patronise the unfamous with an award for 'Mrs Timmings .....sub post mistress for 50 years' sort of thing, but I cant quite fathom exactly what the purpose of the honours is
I'm not a fan of it either. And it's definitely open to interpretation/abuse.
That said, I actually think Floella Benjamin is more justified than most. She's been entertaining/educating generations of children. I'm not saying this makes her more deserving than your average school teacher but probably more so than the majority of celebrity picks.
But I dont want to plaguarise the existing one so I might need some suggestions as to titles
i have a list of dissers who deserve titles, Im just not sure what titles thy should have, ideas would be welcome though.
Im also not sure if Jook can have a title as 'Jook' seems more like A title in itself
