if everything goes to plan, how amazing does this WC quarter final line up look?
July 2, 3pm: Brazil-Holland
July 2, 7.30pm: France-England
July 3, 3pm: Argentina-Germany
July 3, 7.30pm: Italy-Spain
hell yes.

And how often does a World Cup go completely to plan?
27% of the time based on a quick statistical analysis.
happened last time
no real suprises in the later rounds.
I dunno.
I think the general consensus at the time was that Germany would be lucky to get to the quarter-finals, yet they managed to knock out Argentina (who had become by that points favourites after their dominance of the group stage).
hence the 'if'
always like a smaller nation in the later rounds
2002 had Turkey and South Korea in the semis.
Would love to have some wild cards like that again.
the germans only scraped through in the semi final against south korea too
they played some lovely football. they just couldn't finish.
Already posted this but will try again - it may appear twice.
So if that happened it'd be the winners of the Brazil game v the winners of the England game and the winners of the Germany game v the winners of the Spain game would it?
If so I'd fancy England to get third place.
*if this draw came up I mean.
that's the sort of line-up that sees
Italy winning the World Cup
isn't it?
:(
I've got a really bad feeling in my stomach that they might do it.
Really, really don't want them to. Not sure why. I quite like Italy. Maybe it's because they're so boring to watch.
Can't see it
Aside from the fact it's been ages since a team retained the World Cup (1962) Italy usually operate on a cycle of 'one good tournament, two bad ones'. I like them though and wouldn't mind them doing well.
I really rate the USA to get to the quarters, at the very least, this time.
I reckon they've got a good chance of making it to the semis, too.
In the first knockout round, assuming they come second in the group behind England, they'll most likely be playing Germany - a game they could most definitely win. Then barring something horrendous happening Argentina it'll be them in the quarters.
Such a frustrating team to support, seeing as they're basically the less-good version of England.
the USA won't make the semis
be doing very well to reach the quarters.
Your midfield is pretty solid, but your defence is injury affected and the strikeforce is just not really of a high enough quality.
Except for Donovan, of course.
Oh Landon. Sigh.

Serbia
^
If Serbia go out early, I'm out.
Serbia would rape England, btw.
France ain't going through
They shouldn't even be there in the first place.
*backs slowly away from the fuse-lighter*
I'm not Irish.
I'm English in Scotland.
I'm an advocate of goal line cameras at the minimum.
"Cheers".
France's route to the qfs is ridiculously easy though.
I'll be in Sardinia for the QF and SF, so the Italy match(es) should
be pretty sweet.
I just did that too.
England face a poorly-performing Germany in the First Round, then through to face South Korea (second in their group, and through to the quarters after scraping through
I didn't do this wanting England to do well. They've just landed themselves a very good draw this year.
Oh yeah, and Argentina go out in the First Round to a plucky Uruguay.
So my quarters look like:
South Korea - England
Netherlands - Brazil
Serbia - Uruguay
Italy - Spain
Semis:
England - Netherlands
Serbia - Spain
Final:
Netherlands - Spain
I've decided that my powers of prediction aren't much cop...
South Korea through to quarters after scraping through against a lacklustre Mexican side in the First Round, that should read.
This site is so fucked
whichever mod keeps doing this
