not two hours ago the company I work for sent an email to all of it's employees, proudly proclaiming that it would be launching its own in-house IM service from this Wednesday. Oh, publishers ...
Haven't used MSN since I was a teen. Why would you?
It's awful. People expect an instant reply and can never accept that you're either too busy to reply or need to go and find the answer to whatever it is they're asking. I found that it really reduces people's patience in the work place (which I guess may also be true in less formal, more social scenarios). It also leaves no aduit trail, and I need email threads to prove that other people fucked up ...
it's useful for slagging off people within earshot to other people within earshot. Other than that it is fairly useless.
its the most annoying thing in the entire world
'Instant' communication requires feedback or some sort of reassurance that the other person is paying attention. You just don't get that with non-video IM.
WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG
I'll explain everything RIGHT AWAY.
it's just not very good
It's really useful at work, for collaborative projects and when people are working out of the office. Face-to-face and telephone conversations are all fine and well, but you can't paste links etc into them all that easily.
Also good for talking about stuff with colleagues that you don't want everyone else to hear, or for surreptitiously chatting with other mates.
now I go onto msn maybe once a month?
I'd fume if they started infiltrating my computer screen as well.
so I could post back your copy of Alligator :(
Wish it didn't exist really, sick of getting pestered. My job requires sustained periods of concentration and having an orange taskbar icon flashing at you is really annoying.
