Its north of Los Angeles.
go to the castro theatre......beautiful old cinema....and just the castro area in general really.
probably the greatest ever holiday moment in my life was going to watch a film at the castro, getting some amazing cookies in the little shop next door, sitting waiting for the tram talking to the most charming, polite, sweet pensioner who was also dressed like he was going to a judus priest convention...and then as i got the tram, the sun started setting and i had chet baker on my i-pod and everything felt right with the world.
i don't really like LA apart from santa monica...pretty beautiful...try find this place
it's a sight to behold...the greatest video shop you will ever find...they had fucking beckett plays on tape...bukowski readings...documentaries on duchamp....EVERY GILMORE GIRLS SERIES!!!...and bob dylans theme time radio hour on the stereo.
there is a really nice diner....AND IT HAS A BOWLING ALLEY ATTACHED TO IT!!!...amazing. get their fruit platter with yohgurt, tasty shit and just what you need when you've mostly been eating crap for days.
Whereabouts? Berkeley for me. Lived in Alamo as a kid.
but i can't seem to find it - was looking for it as i'm heading to LA in a few weeks time too. And doing San Fran too.
obvious suggestions include:
- Ameoba Records (in both LA and SF)
- Elliott Smith memorial (although apparently isn't all that exciting)
- El Rey in LA - lovely venue to watch gigs in
- The Smell in LA - all-ages club that No Age, etc are involved with
- In 'n Out burger
- If you're driving from LA to SF, go via Big Sur and Monterey
My brain's a bit blank.
Amoeba (as well as being one of the best record shops ever, if you buy something you can claim a free soft drink at Escape From New York Pizza down the road)
Golden Gate Bridge
826 Valencia (especially if you like pirates and/or McSweeneys)
Coit Tower/Telegraph Hill
Tacqueria Cancun (a taco the size of a small-to-medium-sized child for $5!)
Pizza Orgazmica (great pizzas, and they do 2.5 litre towers of home-brewed ale. It's gorgeous stuff, take it from me)
If you have time, make a trip to Berkeley. It's tied with Boulder, CO as my favourite place on earth. Also, Muir Woods and the redwoods are worth a visit.
As for LA, I'm not a big fan, but Amoeba's Hollywood store is phenomenal and you could do worse than Canter's in West Hollywood for a pastrami sandwich. Avoid Hollywood like the plague though- it's like Camden Market but bigger, grimmer and with a bit more sun.
We drove down Big Sur via Santa Cruz (the Main Street, beach, pier, funfair, and Saturn – the vegetarian burger bar – are awesome) Monterey Bay (sea otters and Aquarium), and Santa Barbara – it’s a wonderful trip. We took a detour to Yosemite, and then finished off by heading to the Hoover Dam, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Photos here: http://ihardlyknowher.com/markyssnaps/sets/72157602219179542
- It’s a cliché, but make sure that you do the Alcatraz tour. You’ll have to book in advance, but get on the last one of the day. You go out when it’s light, and the sun is setting behind the Golden Gate bridge, and come back when it’s dark and the city is lit up. Great stuff.
- Amoeba Records.
- Go on the trams. Ignore the fact that only tourists use them, and hang on the side, high-fiving fellow passengers as you cross.
- Go to their MoMA.
We actually stayed in Santa Monica (which has a compact town centre, sits a short walk from Venice Beach and is a little more fun).
Make your way up to the top of Mulholland Drive and watch the sunset.
It’s kinda cool to do the Hollywood stuff (you know, visit the Mann Theatre, drive around Beverly Hills (dropping into Spinkles cupcake shop), do the studio tours, that sort of thing).
Go and watch UCLA play either basketball or football (the latter is at the Rose Bowl in Pasedena.
we could've been touching elbows again marckee, and not even known it :(
We're sort of doing the reverse of your journey.
Lots of what's already been mentioned, plus the Red Victorian Movie House. I like Golden Gate Park too. North beach is a pretty nice area for restaurants/bars.
LA: have a car. If you don't have a car, it's the worst city in the world (I didn't have a car)
do the obvious sunsets clubs and catch a band at the troubadour. I imagine seeing someone at the hollywood bowl would be cool if you couldd find anyone your like playing. Have lunch at the rainbow room.
You need to be driving LA when you first get there go griffith park to get an understanding of the lay of the land. Depending on your nerd ness and nerve you can check out loads of interesting music nerd places, me and my friend drove up the malibu hills to find indigo ranch where loads of famous records were recorded (eg. korn and at the drive in), but we got in trouble with some guy who was well pissed that we just turned up and took pics. I'd like to do the same with the laurel canyon house of rick ruben though.
FYI: chicken and waffles = gross!
do the aquarium at monteray bay on ur way up the coast.
Ride on the ten down to Venice again
Flare out the G-Funk
Sip on a juice and gin
Just you and a friend
Feel kinda groovy
Work on a movie
the Getty Museum in LA is pretty great
I can't recommend anywhere to drink as I was underage. You could swing by Venice and give my ex-boyfriend a slap of you want.
but ‘slap’ is slang for a kinky sex act involving a sea otter.
that's a right only granted to residents. Disneyland, of course. Maybe Universal Studios. Seriously, they're fun. There's cool tide pools in Laguna Beach. In fact all the beaches from Malibu to San Clemente are nice. There's Santa Anita race track. Silver Lake nightclubs. Griffith Park and Observatory. Big ugly brown art deco buildings downtown. (Use the Metro if you can.) Take a drive down Mulholland. See the freaks on Hollywood Blvd. Get your picture taken in front of Mann's Chinese Theatre. The Laugh Factory. The Getty and MOMA and LA County Museum of Modern Art. There's Canter's, as mentioned above. Go see a shitty improv play. Or go to the Pantages and see a good one. Drive through Bel Air to see fav movie star houses. Avoid the freeways during rush hours. Rent a long surfboard and give it a shot (use suntan lotion.) Have a drink poolside at the Beverly Hills hotel. Crash a wedding. Pick up a copy of LA Weekly for current cool stuff.
then take acid in Dolores Park in San Francisco.
