THREADS (1984) *****
BBC need to mine their archives far more often. Totally harrowing, almost certainly traumatised a generation. Must see, especially if you live in Sheffield.
KICK-ASS (2010) **
Far too pleased with itself. Guilty of all the same nauseatingly self-conscious hipness as Juno, Kill Bill etc. Incidentally, have you seen Kill Bill Vol. 1 recently? Borders on unwatchable now. All these films will date terribly.
THE FURY (1978) ****
Carrie meets X-Men, somehow. I love every Brian DePalma film that predates Scarface. It doesn't matter how much they take from Hitchcock when they're so ENTERTAINING.
THE CONVERSATION (1974) *****
Best film of the 70s? Coppola's best for sure.
WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE (1995) ****
I really want to see Solondz' new film now. This was almost as grimly hilarious as Happiness. The "I'm gonna rape you" bit is all-time classic.
PUNISHMENT PARK (1971) *****
A staggering achievement and it's incredibly depressing how relevant it still is.
