How do you say URL? (oh theo?-centric)

sean [Edit] [Delete] 13:09, 18 May '10

A debate in that thread about how I think you're all dribbling mongoloids that I thought deserved it's own thread

Basically is it:
1) YOU ARE EL
2) EARL
3) something else

No.
URL like XML and BBC.
Earl is just confusing.

how is it confusing?
it's what you'd read it as if you weren't aware it was an acronym. only nerds use 3 syllables when one will do

but
YOU ARE EL sounds whack. Like something out of Legally Blonde.
I say Beeb, not Bee Bee Sea.
And I've never once uttered the world EX MEN SMELL.
Do you say Radar ARRGH AY DE AY ARE?
sean @manbearpig | 18 May '10, 11:59 | X | ^ This | Reply
radar is a decent example
Although I normally hate pronouncing acronyms as words, especially ASAP.
foppyish @sean | 18 May '10, 12:01 | X | ^ This | Reply
Because 'earl' is not the way it's said.
Any more than Sean is pronounced 'seen' or Siobhan 'seeoban'.
Pronouncing each letter separately makes it clear you're talking about a URL not about someone or something called 'earl'. It's the convention mainly because it's correct.

this is just sean talking about his website.
why have you boners all got boners about it?
meths | 18 May '10, 12:03 | X | ^ This | Reply
It's convention.
Radar is 'radar', it's not written RADAR any more than laser is written LASER.
URL is URL. Microsoft like to call xaml files 'zammal' files so I'm guessing there's similar fucked up XML pronunciation too.
As for the BBC surely people pronounce it 'Bee-Buh-See' but there you go.

i think this is where i'm supposed to say oh theo
'sean' isn't an acronym!
