What a messed up book to do an essay on.
Anybody read/study this before?
I didn't focus on Lolita, but I referenced it, I've probably read it a dozen times. It's not my favourite of his books (that's Ada), but it's probably his most perfectly realised and consistently written.
If you were to argue it was the best novel of the 20th century, I wouldn't strongly disagree with you.
The annotated version (with one of Nabokov's butterflies on the cover) is a great copy to read if you're writing an essay.
I really like it, I just don't like the fact my whole module is based on perversion and corrupting innocence! My question is:
Humbert’s narration suggests that American media is responsible for Lolita’s ‘corruption.’ Discuss, with support for your argument from the text.
Its okay I guess. A bit naff
I think it's the introduction or endnote where Nabokov laughs at critics who can't agree whether Lolita represents Old Europe corrupting New America or New America corrupting Old Europe, because of course, it's neither. (Then again, there's no reason to trust an author like that, especially one as wily as Nabokov).
Answering the question head-on, I'd say yes, Humbert's narration implies Dolores is corrupted before he arrives, but I'd counter that Nabokov's narration tells us that really, Humbert is an unforgivable monster who likes to blame everyone but himself.
how can you speak of Nabakov's narration as distinct from Humbert's narration?
it was about how and why ''''Lolita''''' has come to mean a young heathenish hussy in popular culture and my hypothesis was that it was tied in with Humbert's unreliability as a narrator and it was pretty rubbish lolz.
1) on a plane to Dublin, a guy asks me why i'm reading such a dodgy book in public
1) a woman on a bus in London asks "why are you reading that book? is it cos you have to or cos you really want to read it?"
It was the subject of my final A Level English essay.
But I don't remember what I wrote about it. I am really smrt.
