a saw a documentary that said by 2018 China would have so many cars that they would have to concrete over the equivalent of their entire agricultural production land area and would be consuming enough paper per year to be equivalent to the entire world's forest stock
they can build mega multi-storey car parks and recycle paper
it's the clean drinking water that might be an issue
then when that stops working, annex part of Canada and use high-propulsion cannons to fire their rubbish over there. Might lead to some Quebecois unrest and some giant mutated infants though.
this is why I'm not an engineer, that and the fact that I've never wanted, tried or have the ability to be one.

'the West' (you're grouping together a whole variety of approaches and records with regards the environment there) whilst not perfect, does at least implememt decent environmental policy.
Anywyas, other countries' attitudes to the environment wasn't the question here - start another thread if you're wanting to discuss that.
it's just that your argument makes me think of student-types who won't hear a bad word said against the policies of developing nations because 'we were just as bad'. In this age of relative enlightenment, that argument doesn't wash.
we'll just move all remaining manufacturing overseas. :)
