'The penalty is 1 mark for every 20 words over length, ie 1 mark if the essay is 2001-2020 marks.'
I've currently got 2258. urghhh +o(
If you can give yourself even 24 hours before you read it again then you'll probably find yourself ditching whole sections.
Otherwise you should get someone else to read it if you can (clearly it will need to be someone who understands the material). Good editing would probably mean reducing it down by 10%.
...then I'm pretty sure that all of the arguments and points made could have pretty much the same effect if reduced to 200 words.
The best way to cut down on words is to reduce waffle. I'm sure pretty much every sentence you've written has too many words in it. You need to cut down your essay by 10% right? So... go through your essay and see where you can cut down on sentences by 10% or even 20%. Example: A typical sentence like this:
The work of Friedrich Nietzsche offers profound insight into a number of wide-ranging theories such as power, religion and identity.
Can easily be trimmed by 20% and say the same thing:
Nietzsche's work offers profound insight into a variety of theories such as power, religion and identity.
So got through it and where you've used too many words to express a simple thing - cut them out! Try cutting every sentence by 10% and see how many words that takes out...
Using phrasing like that is the hallmark of vague and bad writing, IMO.
Sorry Verity. :-/
But yes 'a variety of' is superfluous as well! Still - makes the same point in that you could've said the same thing with significantly fewer words. A variety of fewer words too... ;)
I think we all have a tendency to write like that. I certainly do and that's the sort of thing I don't notice until I come back to something I've written after a bit of a break.
knowing that not everything can or needs to stated with precision, of a sense of rhythm, and of much more besides.
if not (they didn't when I was in uni), put anything that is not central to the argument as a footnote.
But as Theo said, 258 words off a 2000 word essay shouldn't be too difficult.
boke boke boke
hyphenate everything you can without it looking stupid.
aside from that, look for any sentences you've kind of gone the long way round writing. these aren't very good tips, are they?
And I'll do it so, so quickly - 15 mins tops.
Do they get a fiver for every extraneous word they find? What is the rate of pay? Is there an unusually large amount of suicides in that particular profession? I'll bet there is...I'll bet there is.
it's submitted electronically.
and suffer from suicidal depression as a result?
use commas instead of words
use, uh, pretty much anything instead of words.
