Am I right in my recollection that it was MAAASSIIIIVE? Or was I just smaller?
Which was Zavvi and now is some jumble sale type bollocks?
Nope, it was pretty huge. For a shop.
This one was in Piccadilly Circus or some shit, wasn't it? It was pretty big.
was bigger in the late 80s-early 90s
I think they didn't have levels...just the ground floor..so it looked massive
One further down the street. And I think you're right, I don't think the upper levels were open.
But yes, at some point they sold off that block that became a terrible sporting goods store I think. Probably around the same time the Virgin Games Centre got sold to Electronics Boutique.
the sprts store..still has that old look with he ceiling
..I forgot it used to be part of that
but I agree that I seem to remember it having two entrances and that store never seemed to have a proper big brand...
or the other one with like, 4 floors that ran down the side of Piccadilly that is now... something shit. i can't remember.
i forgot what the marble arch one was like
Or maybe that was the HMV.
that i remember anyway.
plus this is just since i've been in london (2001) so maybe there was...?!
Contrary to what I wrote earlier - it was Tower Records. It may have changed to Virgin later on though, I can't remember.
plus there was a Virgin down there as well. There used to be a tunnel linking the two.
i'm confusing them all.
but not like matalan...dark and moody and cyberpunk like Virgin
There was a cinema in that block but I can't remember for sure where it was but I reckon it has to be that one.
We saw a film there but I can't remember which one. I want to say D.A.R.Y.L. but I think that was the poster as upcoming when we went to see something else. Maybe it was InnerSpace?
My earliest memory of that building was 1987 and my cousin used to take me there when she worked there...
I didn't know it was a cinema
There was definitely a cinema on that side of Oxford st. and it was pretty tiny looking.
But it was a Plaza or ABC. For all I know, I am changing the geography in my mind.
I can't find anything to back that up. the Wiki VM article just says a store was opened at that end of Oxford St. and Tottenham Ct. Road in 1979 which would be way too old for me to remember much in the way of cinema trips (and way prior to the period I'm thinking of).
But it was there when I used to go down the street so maybe it was abandoned.
Alternatively Virgin moved to take over that plot when it closed, thus getting the multi-level store?
It had a fairly minimal street entrance, but it was deinitely around at the same time the Megastore was. I remember seeing Breakdance 2, Electric Boogaloo there, when it came out, and also Evil Dead/Evil Dead 2 double bill.
it was big but not as big as HMV on oxford st. no record shop is as big that HMV.
then they made it massive but vertical and it lost its horizontalness
Paul Hardcastle/Unversal Funk "Zero 7"
Steinski & the Word of Mouth "Success"
Prefab Sprout "From Langley Park to Memphis"
Scritti Politti "Provision"
Derek B "Bullet From A Fun"
Ten City "Devotion"
Janet Jackson "Control"
Cameo "Word Up"
The Virgin Games Centre, further up the street.
But I was a D&D geek.
they moved it up later didn't they? I remember queing up to do those weekend all nighter restocking jobs there..and they paid you copper
