I don't like the pressure of knowing the you have to finish in time for the film, even if it's not for hours.
sitting in a dark room, possibly after a few drinks, full of food = sleepy
something to talk about at dinner if you're with someone crap, something to look forward to during the film if it's crap.
The main reason being, obviously, that you have an easy topic of conversation from the get-go. Also, without the pressure of having to head for a film, you can take longer, maybe go get drinks at another bar, invite her back for coffee, drink the coffee, tell her you had a wonderful evening and then call her a cab (paying for half of it, of course). Might get a hug, or even a kiss on the cheek, if you get lucky.
I can't eat a meal without drinking wine, and I hate being in the cinema after I've had a drink. Even if I'm not pissed, I'm still going to need a piss half way through.
And if you go to the cinema early enough, you'll be able to go the pub after your meal, unless you're too full up. Or unless you've already done enough leg work and and are off for some action...if you're on a date.
one or t'other
if it's after then there's a lot of pressure on you to discuss the film
