Who can countersign your passport?
The list on Government gives you is here:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Passports/Applicationinformation/DG_174151
Let's stop and consider this: Having a PhD does not (apparently) mean you can countersign someone's passport. In fact their examples don't mention doctors but do mention opticians, chiropodists, dentists and registered nurses.
Engineers specify professional qualifications but apparently 'journalist' is good enough on its own, though being a 'scientist' would be a joke profession, I guess? And hey, pub landlords and qualified travel agents are good too (but running a corner shop would be worthless).
Am I wrong in thinking this list seems particularly odd?
I recently updated my passport and thought a similar thing
I think it's an anachronism that probably made more sense 80 years ago than now
Except 80 years ago I'd have thought doctors would still be high on that list.
Maybe I missed where the doctors were.
Strange strange list.
i knew i was right to tell them to f-off when people would come to the library to try and get us to countersign
way back up north i worked with someone who was a pub landlord in the evenings
one day, she came in with a limp she happily admitted had been thanks to an injury sustained when chucking her brother out of said pub
another time, my mate was asking folk to help out with his leaflet for a parish council election campaign, he asked her to take a look, y'know, for proofreading, upon which she declared "oh, there's no point me looking at that, i vote BNP anyway". whatever you might think of that, the fact she was sat next to an indian guy she line-managed, at a time when the BNP were still "INJUNS OUT"...well

(For Balonz.)
my mum works in a school,
so these things have never been a problem for me.
Though of course she's exempt so I presume you mean one of her mates?
Bloody nepotism!
one of her "collegues" theo, collegues.
although in theory she has a different surname to me so i'm pretty sure they wouldnt check.
"Member of Parliament"
*snorts*
Amazing thread breakage at such an early stage!
Me!
I've done at least 3.

Probably someone at the Post Office?

i can countersign!
im always getting asked by friends to do it
I could only get my dentist, since GPs are not OK...
luckily any journalist who works for a South London Used Cars Free Weekly Leaflet is fine.
The list is meant to be illustrative and provide examples isn’t it?
It’s not meant to be exhaustive.
^exasperated architect
studied for 7 years and not even respected enough to be able to sign a photo.
But in doing so it's counter-productive and will only result in people ringing for clarification.
Why not just say what doesn't count? Even given the 'upstanding in the community' description, a lot of what's listed have no immediate position like that.
I've signed some of these.
Me! A respected member of society! Wicked times.
Having seen a load of other people from Gresley this weekend
I'm actually less surprised all of a sudden.
