my dad certainly did.
not because of any moral decision, just that he felt it was really really shit and it was a way of getting us to have better taste
But he was a Corrie addict and as such, turned me into one.
but I do, every time. Every advert.
Seriously, I used to love going to friends' places whose parents had the money to afford such largess.
no idea how we afforded that, knowing now how expensive they are.
my dad's name is bill, too: burglar bill!
My parents never watch 'live' tv now as everything is taped so they just fastforward through it all.
My uncle had that. I loved going to his place and using the teletext.
Even when we got a TV that had a remote with Teletext (c. 1990) we couldn't use it as we only had an indoor aerial.
as 'mute' back then meant 'get out of your chair and turn the volume button right down'.
You would obviously then have to turn the volume back up when your program started again
But I do now, have done for a couple of years now. And I will be doing it for my son's sake from now on. Adverts are shit. They're for the brain dead.
I used to have a tape full of them :D
now I just don't let the boys watch commercial channels..cbeebies all the way
that on their tv recorder hard drive thing they have a button which skips the adverts. Amazing!
especially since we used to watch bbc 1 and 2 more often than not when i was a child
He got really angry that they were always too loud as well. This only happened once we got a remote controlled TV.
I loved it when he was in because we'd watch Mork and Mindy, Laurel and Hardy, The Marx Brothers, Ren & Stimpy and that show about the two robots who'd watch an old film and voice over it themselves. Much better than Corrie with my mum.
both did, still do too. Seems fair enough, except that they would practically put their back out trying to sprint for the TV before the first ad appeared. Seemed to be unnecessarily frantic to me.
What was his reasoning? Anti-capitalist politics? Hatred of shite jingles?
so you saved your ears by muting the fuckers.
He also mutes the football because "i don't need to be told what's going on, i can SEE whats going on".
Why would you?
Did you just sit in silence whilst the ads were on, perhaps making up your own jingles?
Very very moody.
and also because the advert jingles annoyed him.
i think we talked during the ad breaks... making up our own jingles, that could've been fun.
very very very moody
sometimes he'd switch the channels or put teletext on. but there was always that risk that he'd mistime and return to the commercial channel a minute or so after the ad break.
Eastenders/Coronation St et al were banned when we were little and anything American was usually derided and switched off with the
exception of the A Team,Street Hawk, Knight Rider and Air Wolf which I was allowed to watch on the grounds that they were AMAZING.
