he managed to get a payout from NBC of $33m, with another $12m for his staff. ouch.
Because I don't live in America.
It's a point though: There's been a lot of reporting on this story, but are these shows actually even transmitted in this country? I remember Letterman's show coming on ITV4 or something at 1am, but that's it.
does anyone care what country something is transmitted in? it's the internet age.
If you can't see how it's a little strange UK media reporting on shows that no-one in the UK watches - you have a problem.
And your internet age line is bunk as well, since all the networks concerned vigorously restrict all non-licensed access to their biggest shows. So unless you're one of the 5 British subscribers to CNBC, or you're a fan of watching five-minute excerpts of month old episodes on Youtube (if they haven't been taken down already), you don't have a leg to stand on here.
no way i'm getting dragged into this. you must be bored today
Taking you ball home so soon? Let's review:
Your first response: Insult without substantiation of your position - why is it a silly post?
Your second response: Claim of non-validity, again with no substantiation - why isn't it a valid point?
Your third response: Withdrawal from discussion - no reason given.
Conclusion: Your entire conduct in this discussion has been to scorn the views of others, but when called to justify your position you act like a twat and refuse to participate. It's not like the question wasn't simple: Why should anyone care about what happens on a TV show that they don't watch? But I guess even simple things tend to be beyond you when you're so bored you just want to argue for the sake of it...
I'm also (CHRIST) with Royter in that I don't like the assumption made that I should even GIVE a shit about a US show in a format that's dead as a dinosaur and pretty terrible.
And personally I object to people using the name 'Conan' on its own as if that should refer to anyone but the creation of Robert E Howard.
that's why we all love him after all, but you should know better. how is Royter's post anything other than very silly? there's no assumption made by lemonbrick! honestly, read the original post again. it's a simple question - 'has anyone been watching.......' WTF??
I'm not sure whether this means I should join an anarcho-syndicalist commune or the BNP.
I don't particularly care for what passes as culture here. There's very little mainstream UK culture which has any relevance or interest to me these days.
It's no better in the US, but this Conan O'Brien thing IS pretty funny.
(and probably staged)
because the network wouldn't be protected against this kind of thing? There wouldn't be a clause in the contract that allowed them to cancel the show/host early due to 'abuse of budget' or something?
Also, the amount of money he's spending is probably cheaper than an advertising campaign - and is proving more effective.
I don't know, I'm just cynical.
Where's all this great drama? Surely we can do better than The Wire, right? After all, we have this great theatre pedigree... Instead, all we can offer is an overly camp piece of sci-fi, some terrible adaptations of books and a load of shitty makeover/reality tv programmes.
And as for comedy, it says quite a lot about us that Have I Got News For You is still the funniest thing on tv.
I know most american TV is shit, but a lot of it is pretty entertaining, if a little vacuous. Which is more than I can say for UK TV.
Have you seen that?
and I nearly suffered an aneurysm
I haven't seen Take Me Out but it's ITV so paid for by advertising mostly so they can make what they want.
31 awful people being awful towards each other.
They're not being awful towards each other. Merely communicating "I would not hit that" in a visual manner. Because men need things spelled out like this most of the time.
Hole In The Wall
All massively compulsive.
not fit to wipe the arse of Blind Date
UK TV WAS A GOOD CHANNEL!
yeah and to gunty i heard the payout was $45 million, so that sounds about right.
read it all on the huffington post.
they moved Leon into primetime and gave Conan his old slot. it hasn't worked and they tried to give Leno a halfhour slot at 11:30pm and bump Conan back to gone midnight. lots of kurfuffle and behind-the-scenes stuff and like presto Conan has been released from his contract as of next week and given a huge payoff. cue a week and a half of embarassing TV for NBC.
viewing figures up the ying yang
it's all bollocks.
and as sadpunk said, NBC would be protected to the innards of their colons is this sort of 'outburst' were indeed authentic. If Conan was actually trying to cause NBC damage, they would flush him now and show reruns of "The Biggest Loser" in his spot until Leno is back in town. And what kind of dick would Conan be to do so? Especially after taking a shitstounding amount of money to go away for a little while. He's acting like the kid at a birthday party who throws tantrums because it's not his birthday.
And why the fuck was Barry Manilow on the next to last NBC show? And Tom Hanks on the last one? Hopefully there will be enough time for Asia to crank out a few progriffic songs to end the show
