KiK would know for sure.
SHODDY, SON. SHODDY.
that story has more info now than it had 10 mins ago. It didn't say anything about Adebayor back then.
"We are still at hospital. We were machine-gunned like dogs and had to remain hidden under our seats for around 20 minutes to avoid the bullets."
That is absolutely insane!
holding a large international tournament every two-years in jan-feb just doesn't fit
who should really learn to either stop buying african players or be quiet.
and good luck to the African FA in developing their talent without the assistance of the developed domestic leagues in the world.
"In January 2008, FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced that he wanted the tournament to be held in either June or July by 2016, to fit in the international calendar. This would preclude many countries in central and west Africa from hosting the competition (as these months occur during their wet season) and if the tournament were to remain biennial, it would have to be moved to odd-numbered years so as not to clash with the World Cup."
Best thing I've seen Blatter say.
I've never seen African teams expressing discontent about playing in the ACN six months before a World Cup.
did they not think that maybe it was a bad idea to pick one venue in the one main area that still has active separatist group(s).
This was supposed to be at the bottom *curses*
I mean It's only been around longer than the European Championships and all, but otherwise it's completely ridiculous. You can make a case for having it every four years rather than every two, but it's been like this for years and club teams should stop bitching about it.
I can understand why they play it in january though. it is in AFRICA.
Is there any football tournament that does that?
or is it just in odd years?
up until 2001 since when it has been every 3 years.
It was pretty irregular for ages
because of the World Cup. The last two competitions were in 2004 and 2007 though.
same as any other month.
playing in northern summer would rule out half the countries from ever hosting it
driver dead, 9 injured. Unbelievable. Though sky sports, as ever, fascinated only by top name stars. Togo will more than likely pull out of the tournament, understandably.
Seriously crazy shit. Obviously people will start to say Africa isn't suited to hosting international tournaments with an eye to next year, completely ignoring the fact that Angola and South Africa are hugely different. It'd be a bit like saying you can't hold a tournament in Spain because of unrest in the Transcaucasus.
As for saying the tournament needs to be binned. Just no.
though I assume you meant 'this year' *pedantic*
where else in sub-saharan africa could even concievably host an international tournament?
the original link is still the one.
He does have an almost amazingly incomphrehensible accent tho.
He speaks quite fluently, but his accent. Just amazing.
doesn't surprise me at all if they pull out, I'd be in shock for months, even years after having gone through that.
Togo seem to have been under some sort of curse, everything that could go wrong for them has done so.
It's not on. Terrorism has become too frequent and we shouldn't act like this isn't a massive thing.
You'd have thought he'd want them back in Britain.
