Let's disect those giant, new Tory posters...

vamos [Edit] [Delete] 09:17, 5 January '10

Well we're about 4 days into the New Year and it's already fairly obvious that there's going to be A LOT of election talk this year. As if to back this up, over the last 2 days a certain face has been haunting my walk home from work.

So let's analyse what this campaign is trying to say:

1) For a start, the image is nice and big and making eye contact. THIS IS IMPORTANT AS IT ENGAGES THE VIEWER WITH THE SUBJECT. Its protagonist has also got a weird floppy hairstyle and could be easily mistaken for David Mitchell. This is obviously a deliberate ploy to win floating voters who like Peep Show.

2) Oooh, he's talking TO us! He's using that word, 'we', and pointing out that things are shite and that it's a collective effort to make things right again. He's also making it clear that the Tory party is all about saving the NHS. Labour are all about 'Education, education, education' (again), but the Tories are going for the jugular with the age old 'We'll save money, but nothing will change. In fact it'll get better. Honest' line. Thanks for the clarification David.

3) What's this in the corner? Green? On a Tory party poster? Oh I forgot... in an attempt to pick up any scrap of vote remaining both parties are saying how awesome the Lib Dems are and the Tories have gone one better by sneaking in a bit of green into their logo. They care about the environment see. Well, this year they do. They probably won't next year when we're all bored by it and tired of paying more for Ecover Washing Powder.

4) Oh God, it's that word again. CHANGE. Yes, we know. It won Blair the election in 1997, I guess it makes sense for Dave to recycle it. But surely I'm not the only person who associates the word 'change' with a small pile of shitty shrapnel you're left with when you've exhausted all the good stuff?

Which aptly is what I think of this campaign. As a designer, I can LITERALLY SMELL the STENCH of the brief and marketing document that accompanied this poster. It smells like SATAN'S SPERM.

I urge you to piss on it whenever you have saved up enough urine to aim that high.
