There's a sentence I never thought I'd say...
He was a struggling artist who decided to start making fakes of lost pieces of art and getting his parents to flog them as family heirlooms.
He managed to sell Bolton Museum an 'Egyption' sculpture that was viewed by the Queen and various other people and 6 out of 7 leading experts thought was genuine despite the fact he knocked it up in three weeks in a garden shed then spent twenty years making hundreds of thousands pounds from the leading museums, art houses and auction houses in Britain.
He made £400, 000 but when the police came to arrest him and his parents they still lived in the same council house,
But he was meticulous in his research and the artwork was brilliant. They reckon there's two thirds of his artwork still out there marked down as genuine...
he sounds like a right scally tom ripley. nice.
