You're going to reach out to somebody, aren't you, for sympathy and comfort, and I don't think it's unsurprising that, for some people, Twitter is such a place to do so.

but odd doesn't imply "vile". No one would think it wrong if she phoned up a friend, would they? I don't see any significant difference.
A need for support in the heat of the moment.
By contrast, what she actually did required her to:
1) Log on to and wait for her Twitter page to load...
2) ...then spend precious seconds tapping out her message...
3) ...to 5000 people, the majority of whom she does not know...
4) ...while her son was being fruitlessly treated by paramedics mere feet away, dying in the process (in fact, already dead).
Frankly, the fucking internet would be the last thing on my mind if a loved one was dying pretty much at my feet, and technically dying because of my lapse in concentration.
what she did required rational thought.
Who instinctively logs onto the internet...ah, fuckit. I'm feeling merry, it's Saturday night, I've got a sweet-ass movie to watch...I cba with this.
than anyone they know in real life. That should be more evident here than anywhere. If it were the case that she just saw an opportunity to get her number of followers up, then undoubtedly, that would be pretty sick, but there's only conjecture to suggest that's what she was doing.
