there is no scale below that of electrons. Electrons are fundamental particles. And I think describing strings as waves is confusing the issue.

but I think Protons, Nucleons and Electrons are each made of 3 quarks, with various names. The interactions between these causes positive / negative charge etc. Quarks are possibly made up of vibrating waves of "energy" (not sure about that), which are called strings.
Gravity is much weaker than the other 3 fundamental forces eg. electromagnetism. For this reason physicists think that the effects of gravity might be felt in higher dimensions that don't affect our 3.
