is there anything you can actually do or do you just have to wait for it to pass?

it's at the point where every so often i have to go spit in the sink because it hurts that much to swallow (insert rude joke here). feels like everything inside my throat is super swollen and well, it's not very comfortable to say the least so any tips would be most welcome.
