A couple of completely unrelated medical questions..
Has any of the female DiSers had a coil fitted before? I've got an appointment to get one, but since making it I've been doing a bit of googling and it looks like I'm going to be in quite a bit of pain.. How sore is it and how long does it last (ie just while it's being put in or is it painful for a while after)?
Also... I've just started taking citalopram (anti-depressant) and my doctor told me not to drink on it. I'm assuming he means not to get blootered, a few drinks should be fine, right? What is supposed to happen if you drink whilst on medication like this?

Wearing my psychiatrist's hat...
alcohol is depressogenic, so effectively would annul the anti-depressant effect of citalopram in large amounts. It is also said that alcohol may amplify the side effects of anti-depressants. Citalopram is a fairly "clean" drug, so I wouldn't worry that much. But I guess a couple of drinks here and there should do no harm (but don't say that a doctor said so!)..
Wouldn't know much about the other question, as I'm neither a girl nor a gynaecologist.
DiS could really do with a resident psychiatrist
or do you come here just for research purposes?
Nothing happens
Drink yourself silly.
ummm
well you might want to wait a few weeks until the medication settles itself down a bit. when i started taking fluoxetine i couldn't drink without weeping myself to sleep when i got home, or something. but it's alright now. (incidently one of my mates is on citalopram and drinks like a fish, and he's fine.)
Could I have my money back please?
Ta.
re: the long term contraception thingy...
My missus had an implant in her arm which lasted 3 years, and was fairly free of side effects and pain, unless she was punched on it, which happened infrequently. I think you can get ones that have different lifespans too.
As for drinking on anti-depressents, i'd have thought it'll surpress their effectiveness and therefore your hangovers will probably be a little worse/depressing than normal. I guess you got to decide what you want from taking these pills...and whether you'd be willing to sacrifice the beer for achieving this...
my good lady has one of these too
seems far less hassle/invasive than the coil.
but i'm a chap, what do i know...?
