In order to save the world we all have to become vegetarian apparently. Bugger...

vamos [Edit] [Delete] 17 replies 16:24, 29 October '09

This follows on from that piece about the thing on that channel the other day. You know, the one about us all being evil and the average cow producing more gas than a stag do ensemble after the third night of takeaways:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/oct/28/giving-up-meat

I've more or less stopped eating fish due to that damned film 'End of the line'. But I'd really miss bacon. And cheese.

I don't know if I'm up to saving the world? How about you?

  • A world where we can't eat meat

isn't really a world worth saving. Pass.

  • It's pretty weird, isn't it?

Upshot is that if you had to get rid of meat I bet there'd be some pretty amazingly meat-like substitutes created quickly.

    • What, you mean something better than quorn??

      JohnM @TheoGB | 29 Oct '09, 16:46 | X
      • I guess so.

For me most Quorn things taste so meaty I don't like them.

    • Have you tried ASDA's own brand veggie meatballs?

      You really should.

      • I hate the taste of meat.

        I imagine I really shouldn't.

  • You shouldn't have stopped eating fish!

You should support those fisheries who implement sustainable fishing methods etc., as certified by the Marine Stewardship Council. This will create a demand for such fisheries so that more and more fishery managers see the benefit in certification and we can enjoy more readily-available sustainably-sourced fish.

    • Yeah we do do that

But when you're in a restaurant or sandwich shop, they very rarely handily put little symbols on their wares to inform you whether or not the seafood is alright and endorsed by the MSC.

In a supermarket or fish mongers is fine. It just means I rarely eat fish out and about...

  • I saw a similar article in The Times on tuesday

and the thing is... it's all true. Fuck.

    a few unrelated questions/anecdotes
    1) a friend of mine is vegetarian for environmental reasons. He would buy meat 'from source' (ie from the farm it was produced or slaughtered) if it were as close as physically possible to his house. Which is fair enough. But he usually can't be bothered, and thus is now a vegetarian.
    2) Does this mean that organically produced meat (which generally requires more land to produce the food required) or 'ethically produced'/free range meat (which generally requires more land for the animals themselves) is actually *more* damaging to the environment because of the land it requires which could otherwise be used for crops / living space for humans? Is it in actually fact intensive farming which will save the planet?
    3) I heard somewhere some obscene amount of rainforest is cleared each year to make room for intensive farming for the production of beef for fast-food outlets.

I'm generally trying to cut down my meat comsuption, partly for environmental reasons but also so I can afford to buy more 'ethically produced meat' (which is inevitably more expensive). The though of cutting out meat altogether makes me sad.

Maaan, I could do with a steak right now.

  • but don't vegetarians fart more?

    catch 22

    douchebag | 29 Oct '09, 17:34 | X
    • ^^

      this

if we ate veg all the time, the gas would come from us instead of the cows.

go vegetarian to save the planet, the worse thing is that some people actual believe this crap.

      • farts are an energy

you can never change the amount, only redistribute them
