we are RECOMMENDED to use it. i havent got it. its so shit.
it was an ok day
Any chance of you posting some usage stats for the browsers that DiS users use (w/ IE versions broken down)?
Can't you just put a banner up for IE6 (and below) users that says "sorry if the site is borked for you, but your browser is gash, please upgrade to one that is standards compliant". Then you can aviod all the IE6 workarounds, which would be for the greater good.
If people use IE6, so what? They can always upgrade to 7 anytime they like - Or even 8.
End of story. What a non-article.
No one uses a comparably old browser. Moreover, it was always very buggy and idiosyncratic.
Interestingly that article states, "Simply because the majority of large companies are still using Windows XP, many of them are still using the browser that came with it," but I think XP shipped with IE5 or 5.5.
Exactly why IE6 has a share it does is still down to this sort of situation, though. It's rubbish and it needs to change. Companies need to just accept that IE8 is definitely an improvement and upgrade.
but where i work there must be at least 1000+ computers and upgrading them all to IE8 or whatever would take massive ammounts of time and effort.
IE6 was bundled with that and although you could suppress it being installed for around a year, eventually that was forced on pretty much anyone.
which means websites either have to spend lots of time and money making their websites work properly with it, or risk alienating lots of users.
additionally, it is insecure, and insecure computers harm everyone.
We only got 'upgraded' to Windows XP 3 years ago! God knows when they'll get round to upgrading our browsers! It is annoying as a few sites I regularly visit (this one included) don't work 100% in IE6, but it's not as if I can complain to work, I don't think they'd see DiS as work related!
we're unable to use anything else, Firefox is blocked, I used Chrome ok for a while but now that doesn't work either!
That might work.
til I got admin rights and could install IE7.
It was exactly the same as whatever it is I use/used at work, only some things were in different places.
Browsers are one of those complainy things that I will never, ever understand.
no plans to upgrade anytime soon.
My machine has IE7 for rss feeds which I had to fill out half a dozen forms for indicating my reasons.
I use portable firefox for twitbin and zotero
are/were optimised for IE6 and, therefore, said companies can't be doing with updating IE until it's absolutely necessary.
It's an annoyance.
