and the amount of maintainence it goes through - would you persist in using it ?
i don't remember it being
as we had to radically change the site to cut down on server costs and sluggishness with the database - this was one of the first times we'd overhauled things in about 6 years and we had no idea how many people were using IE6 (of which, there is still a tiny percent of our users, yet a lot of the most dedicated users of the site)
but you also seem to assume that i don't care. i really-really fucking care but you can't care about things you're not aware of until they were pointed out to me by users at the dis party last week.
its always been fucked. There's always days when it takes an eon to load, so to be honest I don't see what the big deal is.
the maintenance today has been speeding the site up and fixing issues, like the notes, that we weren't aware of.
if you're not using ie6 there really isn't much wrong with the site.
we still get 100+ new users signing up every week and this has been a constant number over the past 4 years since we started tracking people signing up.
the site has literally been off for about 12mins, 15mins max today. and it's never more than about 10mins a day.
yeah, we had our biggest months for traffic ever last month (412k unique users) but the traffic is nearly a straight line over the past 4 years (our stats don't go back much before that).
new people come, old people go, most of our traffic is always one-off visitors from google.
number of board posts per day/week is as high as ever, we've just made things more digestible than they once were.
that's about 130 threads started per week day on average about 54 per weekend day on average. about 60,000 responses per month.
And I'm bloody sick of people whingeing about the site as well...
i sometimes think that the people talking about the issues with the site blow whatever issues there are out of proportion. i love passion and i'm all for people saying whatever they like but i don't like the accusation that we don't care because we really REALLY do care, DiS is our lives and our living. tom is often up 'til 4am working on fixes and the pair of us have spent a year trying to understand the issues, fixing things and trying to develop some new stuff (much of which people have liked, some of which has had an adverse affect on the site). i'm not asking for respect or anything but a lot of the negativity massively eats away at morale and focus. we've spent weeks fixing things and searching for viruses that aren't there. we've spent months trying to get the site to work in obsolete browsers for a tiny minority of users (not even youtube bothers to sort out ie6 any more and they're one of the biggest companies in the world with resources far beyond ours)
I haven't done a double post for weeks!
the site has been working (almost) perfectly for me for the last 6+ months. Good work.
yeah it may take ages for anything to happen
yeah somedays you may not get any result at all
But every now and again you get caught up in the sublime genius of it all.
Some days you might not be affected by it at all - you might even begin to think it's gone into remission - but deep down, you know you still have AIDS.
are you saying there will never be a cure to AIDS? have some faith, please.
