Like most of those handheld camera things, this baby is slow to get going. But once it does?
Fuck. Ing. Hell.
I'm not usually one for them, because I think often character is neglected in these first-person horror films. But this one delivers - big time. I cared about the characters because I recognized them - I know people like this. And it follows that I cared what happened to them.
It's the usual hokum, of course; small, relatively inconsequential events gradually build in significance.
Best part? The boyfriend calling the - demon? - out, calling it a pussy, saying it's worthless. Later that night, a couple of discreet scratches...a slight rustle of clothing...an alien scream and then a massive THUMP! The not-so happy couple leap from bed, grab the camera, head downstairs to find the chandelier swinging in the living room. Why did that swinging chandelier scare me even more than the scream? I honestly could not tell you.
So yeah, it scared the hell out of me. I had the adrenaline pumping, my heart beating like a fucked clock - and I, rest assured, am a fearless man, with large testicles.
Scary. Refreshing. Necessary. If you in any way consider yourself a fan of horror, see it.
