Discussing this in a lecture today. How does this work between church and state?

I mean, women are restricted to certain roles within the church of england/the roman catholic church, but surely this completely violates state policy. Or are women generally just content to progress as far as their doctrine permits? Shouldn't it be up to world faiths to adapt to modern climate?
