a bit strange?
I've never seen more than 20 mins of the godfather. Coulbn't be arsed. I am strange. Hypothesis proved.
about how films like the Godfather don't really exist because everyone can remember bits of them or seeing them on best of charts but no one has actually seen them.
i assume that the godfather is the kind of film that 'everyone' will have seen
I put this to the test the other day when I actually did see The Godfather for the first time - AND realised that I'd pretty much seen the whole thing piecemeal during the previous 20-something years.
AND it was merely 'pretty good' to boot.
case in point
Just ordered... cheers for that!
i've never seen it but have seen loads of other films. it's like saying to someone 'you've never read 'bleak house'? no? bit weird'. it's a bit of cliche - no-one ever goes have you seen 'citizen kane' and that's meant to be the better, more seminal film.
gosh, that sounds defensive.
a person of my exact age, who shares most of my interests and in fact does the same course as me, who's never seen the godfather, or hardly any films at all beyond spongebob squarepants, or so it would appear.
i was just trying to be more inclusive.
ps. bleak house is shit.
is 'the godfather' a specified film on your course?
well, maybe bleak house isn't the best example for an average student - i'll go with 'the divine comedy' 'tom jones' or 'piers the ploughman'
i haven't. suppose it is a bit strange. my life is still very rich
I just checked though and it started 15 minutes ago :-(
The dialogue crackles and pops wonderfully.
and it was being written on set day by day.
and write entire episodes of the West Wing overnight before a deadline.
It's stagey, sure, and nobody actually talks like that, but Casablanca rattles along perfectly.
when there were so many funnier brilliant films. i just saw 'sullivan's travels' which was made the year before 'casablanca' and it's so much more sexier, wittier, smarter, and intelligent.
It's maybe not the amazing film it once was but 'shit' should be reserved for genuine turds like 'Repossessed' or 'Mortal Kombat'.
so what if it was original at the time. its shit now
not sure if it's the greatest film ever, whatever that means, but it still looks remarkable, and is quite moving
as for casablanca, i'm not sure it was ever a great film, but obviously not quite as bad as 'porky's 3' or anything
otherwise michael bay would be the new christ. dunno about it being moving either, it put 3/4 of the people i watched it with to sleep, and while i could appreciate the way it was filmed, it did absolutely nothing for me
who has hardly seen any films. Occassionally I feel like I should, but its not like music and books, which i just feel naturally drawn to. Its always a bit of an effort? I think its partly because I hate sitting in front of the TV for that long, (although i do enjoy it if its actually at the cinema)
I hate people that sit at home flicking through the Sky Movies channels and start watching films that are already three quarters of the way through. I regard these people as boring and vacant minded.
My brother watching two films at the same time. He'd watch five minutes of one and then five minutes of another. How can you possibly get anything out of doing this?
if you blip between the channels fast enough then you're basically watching two films at once
you never just want to watch a particular scene, or a particular bit in a song, or side 2 of a record instead of the whole thing, or a single chapter in a book you like?
for the record
I get treated like a retard sometimes because of my film ignorance :(
and ive seen loads of films, just too much effort really.
I'm not that bothered about that either.
You could apply your hypothosis to anything that your passionate about and others arn't.
Example: "I can't believe people have never been surfing"
"I can't believe some people have never listened to "Dark side of the moon""
my dad has made me listen to that record so many times I could probably sing you back the entire thing. At least it isn't as bad as The Wall.
I am a cultural vacuum.
godfathers long winded and boring and dark side of the moon's just a crock of wanky shit
and he loves the Godfather films.
There are loads of classics I haven't seen and if this guy wasn't my best mate there would probably be very few films I'd seen full stop.
that more people falsely claim to have seen the Godfather than any other film?
There'll be five or six VHS copies of it at your local charity shop.
Alongside 3 large cased ex-rental copies of Bridget Jones' Diary.
And 6 sun-faded copies of The Full Monty.
have only seen one pre-Pierce Brosnan bond film. And that was Goldfinger, this year. It was hilariously dated. In a not-so-good way.
Until not so long ago, I'd only seen about 5/6 films from before 1997.
Short Circuit 2.
Flight of the Navigator.
That's about it, give or take. Which is pretty poor for a guy of my years. No Beverly Hills Cop. No Arnie. No Lethal Weapon. No Carry Ons.
Mrs Wza reckons it's because my folks used to take us out and about for Bank Holiday Weekends.
Also, until I was 12/13 or so, my folks used to watch the PG hired VHS tapes we got from the mobile vid hire van guy, before me & my sis, to check they weren't unsuitable. Bless 'em. And bless my sheltered upbringing.
Things have markedly inmproved since I got an Cineworld Unlimited card.
On top of that, I watch precisely zero of the supposedly amazing US drama imports (aside from a couple of slow & underwhelming episodes of Sopranos/Mad Men). As far as I can tell, they've got remarkably tedious and drawn out plots. I preferz my dramaz condensed and distilled in 2hr format at the cinema.
Sounds remarkably like my DiS posts.
Ive sat through the godfather 3 times and onlt got 2/3rds of the way through. blah blah blah
chances are that I'll have only seen 5 of them.
thats me then
You bunch of freaks.
Don't know how it skipped me by before.
Hard as it may be to believe I’m also really into films. It just didn’t appeal to me that much in the past & now I just haven’t got round to it.
I admit it is strange.
