Going back to uni

the_dazzled [Edit] [Delete] 13 replies 16:18, 9 October '09

I'm probably going to go back to university next year for an msc.

The courses i like/can afford only seem to be at warwick and lancaster which is a bit lame.

Anyone been a postgrad at either uni? What's it like being a postgrad in your mid-twenties?

Without wanting to sound xenophobic, i'm a bit worried about being in a corridor full of cliquey international students, bored and lonely.

  • i went to warwick

    law 2004-2007

i liked the place, though yes, even in undergraduate years there are a lot of cliquey international students, what with the fees they pay they are the core target for places like warwick i reckon. Post-grads seemed to be a healthy mix tho

still doing a lot of work on the campus atm i believe so cant really comment anymore on what its like :(

  • I've just gone back to uni to do an MA (I'm 26)

I think there's more of a range of ages with Masters' courses, but it probably depends what course you're doing. In your mid-twenties you're not really that much older than all the people who've just finished their Bachelor's, anyway.

I was a bit worried about not making any friends, or all the international students just speaking only to people from the same country, but so far everyone's been quite friendly. I just figured, it's not really that bad if I don't make any friends, it's only for a year and basically, that's not the reason I'm there, I'm there to work my arse off and hopefully get a decent degree at the end of it.

Good luck with it - what is it that you want to study?

    • Management science probably

Camaraderie always helps with motivation i feel.

Which uni did you go to? I shall be turning 26 at the time. I imagine i'll be working my arse off 90% of the time, but i'd still like to expand my social circle.

      • I'm at B'ham

You'll be alright, there'll be other people there who are in the same boat as you.

  • i just started a postgrad at warwick last month

it's in medicine, so a bit different to other postgrad courses in the sense that it's not disproportionately international students or very 'mature' students who aren't interested in a good social life. But I was worried about going back to university at 22/23 too, especially for a 4 year course, and so far I can say it's been nothing but a good decision - I'm enjoying the course and I've met a bunch of awesome people. I can't say I know the place massively well just yet but if you have any questions then feel free to PM me!

  • I wouldn't worry.......

I'm going to Southampton for an MSc next year and I'll be 30 then.

  • Go to Lancaster!

I went there. It's awesome. (I was an undergrad though) If you want to live on campus they have a whole college specifically for post grads, so you should be with people in the same situation. It's also really good for social events, so even if you didn't live with fun people, you wouldn't be by yourself.

  • cheers

they both sound quite good then.

will pick on the strength of course then probably. standby, i may PM you people over the coming weeks with questions.

  • "in a corridor full of cliquey international students, bored and lonely"

this pretty much sums up my postgrad accomodation experience.

luckily there are a few people on my course who enjoy cinema/gigs/pub and stuff.
