Anyone ever done this? Europe or Asia even? A few of us were talking about it in the pub tonight and I think it's a stupidly good idea. It really would be amazing. Four to six weeks travelling the States by train. We'd probably go from New York to San Fransisco. Is that even the most logical start and end cities?

Tell me stories of how amazing this journey is or similar journeys! What was it like? What are the best places to visit? How long had you planned it? I'm thinking setting off around Christmas '10 is a good idea...or is that too soon?
