Sex in films, that is...

I'm just watching In the Realm of the Senses (Oshima), which is about a couple constantly having mad sex and then her cutting off his penis, and I'm finding it quite boring. Most sex scenes in films are pretty pointless, which is weird given that it's an important part of real life. Sometimes I think the only reason arty films about relationships that aren't about sex itself have sex scenes is to distinguish them from romantic comedies/mainstream potboiler type stuff.
