I'm tempted to move to Bristol. Good idea or not?
Living in Croydon at the mo so sort of in London, well close enough to be able to go to most gigs and get home easily.
I can't really stand it though at the moment. Would have to find a job obviously but what positives are there in Bristol? Is it that good a place?

Yes, it's excellent
currently has a very good music scene, loads of gig venues, great pubs, shops. You can probably find somewhere to rent in a nice, quiet area that is still only 15 minutes walk into the centre.
It's under two hours from loads of other places (London, Birmingham, ATP Minehead, Cardiff, the coast) with good trains. The airport is nearby and flies to most of Europe.
Also, Bristol doesn't really have a traditional city centre and everything is dotted about so you discover more and more over time. I've been here six years and I'm still finding new places and things to do.
I'm sure I'll add more shortly.
Ta.
You know the names of the decent gig venues? Know The Croft but think i'd have to start off doing bar work somewhere to pay bills.
Yeahyou say)
there's plenty of decent gig venues:
- The Croft (as
Sorry, replied too early
- The Croft
- Louisiana
- Thekla
- Fleece
- Junction
- The Cooler
- Mothers Ruin
- The Lanes
- Start the Bus
Those last 3 are predominantly bars that put on gigs fairly often.
Thekla, Fleece, Cooler, Bierkeller, Trinity Centre...
They're all around the same area, just south of the uni, so that's probably where you're going to be wanting to live.
Thank you both.
Will start looking into those. Taa
Oddly I was having similar thoughts.
Then I read that other thread about the crappest towns in the UK and it made me realise that for all its flaws, London is actually great.
Peckham in springtime.
*St Pauls
St Pauls is fine
so is Peckham
It would be nice place to move to
I know a group who moved there and exchanged tiny box rooms for gigantic houses with cute tiny slave quarters in the attic.
The hills will kill me within 2 years though
You get used to the hills
and they're only really in a pretty small part of the city (Clifton/Kingsdown/Cotham). You can avoid encountering them regularly if you live around Southville/Bedminster/Redcliff way.
Hills also mean you get amazing views.
