could anyone please recommend me a good book to start off with?
Great / important text but not hugely awesome for layman-dipping-in. This:
Is a modern, accessible book, and a nice broad introduction to a broad range of philosophical problems. Russell is a bit of a kick in the balls if you've never read anything before.
i probably should have explained a bit more, i'm about to start third year of philosophy at uni, and am going to take a course on the history of analytic philosophy, but having missed a whole second year philosophy course to mess about with film studies i was looking for something that would give me a bit of grounding. same with philosophy of language if anyone knows of any good intro texts.
having never read anything remotely philosophical before in his life
