Mad Men

orsonwellesrabbit [Edit] [Delete] 09:20, 31 August '09

Why/how is this show garnering so much adulation?

I've managed to sit through the first three episodes and half of the fourth before realizing I'd been bored shitless the entire time I was watching it.

Oh, wow! Don Draper is such an existentialist figure. Wow! People were really sexist in the early-sixties. Wow! You can really detect the oncoming social upheavals the baby boomers will instigate. Wow! The art design and photography are incredibly cinematic. Wow! It's three hours into the series and I still don't like or even particularly care about these people. Wow! All my friends are urging it on me. Wow! All my friends are morons. Wow! WHEN THE FUCK IS SOMETHING GOING TO HAPPEN?

Christ. It moves at the pace of a snail tied to a dead bovine.

Fair enough, I don't mind slow burning stories. But fucking hell, it's not even like the stories are particularly original. It's a fucking daytime soap opera dressed up as insightful social commentary. Yes, Don Draper is a morally compromised character. But guess what? So is every other fucking character in every other fucking television show these days.

So in closing: Mad Men, you suck so hard.
