recommend a book for me to take on holiday
something absorbing, that will take me 3-5 days to read. i like 100 years of solitude, time traveler's wife, etc.

Camus -The Plague
Tartt - The Secret History
Hollinghurst - The Line of Beauty
good holiday books
Bonfire of the Vanities
It's a nice big chunky one, really gripping but not overly challenging either.
The Book Thief
is alright.
There are better books in this thread
but for a holiday I would go with this one. As he says; it's alright.
Something by Murakami?
The count of monte cristo by dumas is a good holiday read, and BIG.
yeah - how about kafka on the shore?
or maybe oryx and crake by margaret atwood (i recommend this book whenever i recommend a book)
"100 years of solitude, time traveler's wife etc"
Is for sure one of the strangest sentences I've ever read on DiS.
In what way is there an "etc" there?!
I finished "Remainder" by Tom McCarthy
this morning, it's brilliant.
yes, yes it is
simmers impressively for three-quarters of its length and then bursts into fire through its astonishing, eye-widening final act. for such a humble start (seeming like nothing so much as one of chris morris' blue jam monologues) it spans its ideas colossally, fills its time with lots and *lots* of space...
i would say
sound of laughter by peter kay
the gun slinger by stepen king
or The serect
try The Shadow of the Wind
by carlos ruiz zafon.

Carter Beats The Devil by Glen David Gold
A bit of a page-turner mystery/adventure about stage magicians in 1920's US. Perfect holiday reading.
i dunno why people want to read different books than usual when on holiday
but then again i remember getting picked up from the airport by a proper mental taxi driver and deciding not to put my seatbelt on because i was abroad. \m/
The Ruins
The Affirmation by Christopher Priest
A wonderful book with a travel element to fulfil all your holiday needs.
how was the holiday?
what book did you end up taking?
