^ what the title says. im going to be moving there, so.. any recommendations?
i'll get the brief shameless bit out the way first, this is our club = http://www.clubclique.co.uk/
we have guest DJs that you might like (this year so far = mystery jets, foals, frankmusik, florence and the machine, lovefoxx, etc..) and the 'mixtapes' give you a good idea of what the music we play is like.
there's a wee film here that sorta show what the night is like =
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2cY7_ZiBtk (hit HD)
anyway enough self-promo.
this is our favourite local bar = http://www.aplacecalledcommon.co.uk/
these venues are both excellent currently for the mix of atmosphere, safe crowd, good bands, nice drinks etc =
the deaf institute = http://www.thedeafinstitute.co.uk/
the ruby lounge = http://www.therubylounge.org/
here's a neat little local listings site that brings together much of the stuff that's going on http://northernights.co.uk/blog =
here's another good local blog =
here's the listings for the 3 big 'academy' venues which during term time are the busiest for bigger bands, something on every single day of term time pretty much (check their 'hall of fame' at the bottom for a bit of history)
and here's one of the best record shops in the country =
and lastly here's the site for the big 'warehouse project' events happening in autumn
that should be enough for now!
hope you like it in manchester, it's f*cking great here!
i actually spent a day in manchester about a year ago and drank in an excellent bar the name of which i completely forgot, turns out it was common. so yay for that! and i had a poke around both vinyl exchange and piccadilly records which are pretty much mindblowingly amazing when you've been living in one of the many UK cities that lack any kind of record shop whatsoever that isnt HMV or a second hand one stocked entirely with 90s compilation cds and knackered 60s vinyl.
i could certainly see myself paying a visit to your club night sometime in the near future also, sounds like good stuffs.
still going/still any good?
Things change (I haven't lived there for the best part of a decade). Fair enuff.
had many an insane night there oldskool. its now MINT LOUNGE which is where our club is. its a great space.
gigs=islington mill, club, the academys, night and day, sometimes cafe saki (though not reallly any more as they charge loads now to put stuff on), satans hollow, Roadhouse... shit mindblank.
Check out golden lab for good listings, sign up to the academys and the mills too. Piccadily records always have lots of random gig flyers knocking about on the counter and the guys in there are lovely.
Going out/ Smile, Up the Racket, Keys Money Lipstick and Clique are all the bigger indiekid nights. Smaller ones are revolver ( at the Roadhouse for 60s stuff, Yo Mamas Cookin at Tiger Lounge is fun too for 50s stuff and CAKE COMPETITIONS (you heard right) theres more little clubnights getting started there too so check it out.
Going out drinking (bars): trof, fab cafe, tv21, sand bar, font, night and day
pubs: the britons protection, lass o gowrie, jolly angler
I miss mancs, but hope that helps!x
Katsori's Deli on Deansgate does amazingly amazing sandwiches.
Night n Day puts on decent bands but the venue is hot and
over-priced. Deaf Institute is ace.
And a load of other stuff I've forgotten.
knew I'd forgotten to stick something on the gig part. DEFINITELY look whats coming up there gigwise
are BOTH great fun (much more than I was ever expecting when I went), and sometimes Kro Bar can have some good gigs.
Also, Pineapple Folk//Hey Manchester! (more or less the same thing these days) have recently put on all sorts of really good gigs, they're putting on Times New Viking//Lovvers//Young British Artists at the new Trof place in Fallowfield. Shoudl be awesome.
Don't know why this ended up here.
Port O'Brien, Papercuts, Run Toto Run at the Night and Day Cafe. Doors at 8pm. Really looking forward to it. Self promotion over...
Other pubs: The Marble Arch and The Angel - both on Rochdale Road and both excellent. The Kings Arms and The New Oxford are two other good pubs and both just in Salford.
I haven't yet bought a ticket. Please can you confirm if:
A) there are lots of tickets left
B) there will be pots and pans to play like last Port O'brien gig?
A. You should be fine buying on the door.
B. Not sure.
I'm quite in love with Cambria Banjoist. I'll be swooning from the audience.
Next to Oxford Road station, basically my second home.
