It actually wouldn't shock me if British people were less socially confident/skilled/physically healthy than some other countries (though at the same time I've no empirical evidence to support that) but I strongly doubt it's a particularly female-centric problem.
I've had conversations with 3 British girls, and 2 out of 3 were the same.
