can you still do sums without using a calculator?
i mean written down sums, not mental arithmatic.
i just tried to do a simple "take away" sum and failed miserably. in my head, easy peasy, but written down - uh uh. i can still add up and do do mulitplication, long division however...
can you remind me how to do it? diagrams would help. i.e. we couldnt work out how to do this:
221
-56
_____
= ???
no
What the hell are you talking about
you know maths yeah?
the basis of the universe
I'd just do it in my head.
Playing darts helps with this.
But yeah, I couldn't do it on paper 'showing my working'. I'd probably fail GCSE maths, even though I'd get the answer right.
Heroes like Bamos. They deserve high definition.
165
without a calculator
der.
how do you work it out tho?
221 - 56
= 221 - 6 - 50
= 215 - 50
= 200 - 50 + 15
= 150 + 15
= 165
or something along those lines
i wish i went to your school...
Probably not
I reckon I could still suss a simultaneous equation, but I wouldn't be able to show my working so I might as well just cheat.
Actually, yeah
221
-56
You can't take 6 from 1, so cross out the 2 in the middle and put the 1 next to the other 1 to make 11. Now take 6 from 11 = 5.
WRITE DOWN 5 UNDERNEATH THE 6
Now you're left with 21 on top (now you've crossed out the 2 and replaced it with a 1). So take away 5 from 21. This gives you 16.
WRITE DOWN 16 IN FRONT OF 5.
This give you 165.
nice workings.
i'm not sure thats how i rememeber it tho. i'm gonna check with my mum. she can do the times tables using only her fingers.

Nope
Sin, cos and tan are now nothing more to me than words I can try in vain to make funnier words out of
...
Absolutely. I use Google now.
I couldn't ever do long division :(
can someone teach me?
I'm amazing at times tables though
what is "long" division?
heres a helpful video to explain

i don't know.
you're not helping!
i got a takeaway last night and the guy used a calculator to work out £4.95 + 50p
I wasn't shocked to learn it was £5.45
THEN straight after he used it to work out £5.85 + 50p.
To be continued...
yes i can.
i do sums all the day. just there i had to do this:
hL = 22.96 x ( (87.087 x 66.672) / 43.764 )
165
what do i win?
A calculator
i would show my working
but tinypic is blocked at work! (I'm amazed that DiS is allowed; i think my IT manager just pities me).
just type it out on here.
its not that hard.
I did it
but I do it all in my head so no working to show sorry
