'Sometimes a change is good for a player' (Friday football Thread)
So says Shay Given. I suppose it was for him in all fairness. For JT? I suspect not, unless he likes being as hated as dear old Cashley.
Man Utd's hotel blows up; team decide to cancel friendly there. Perhaps understandably.
Pardew takes over at Southampton. So expect them to get promoted soon, and then fire him at the first sign of trouble the following season.
Downing goes to Villa - is Young off? I kind of hope not, but then he is in my fantasy football team...
Ronaldo reckons Owen will be alright because he's 'played at the biggest club'. Which is the one he's at, obviously.
Wigan and Wolves are fighting it out for £2 million Hamilton midfielder McCarthy.
Southend sign Chelsea wonderkid Lee Sawyer on loan until at least January, but I'm hoping it's about 10 years longer than that.
Blackburn seem interested in Alan Smith. Well done Blackburn.
And City supposedly offer over £15 million for Lescott. What will Moyes do now eh?

And this piece on Laurie Cunningham is rather interesting:

JT's already pretty much universally hated though, isn't he?
Miroslav Stoch has gone out on loan to FC Twente for the next season. Looks like a great little player just waiting to happen, a bit gutted I won't be seeing much of him next season.
Career highlight so far: kicking an Arsenal reserve from a lying position after said Arsenal reserve had pushed him down.
Terry's a strange one
I think he's disliked on here for quite a few reasons, but a lot of the "Ingerland" crowd seem to adore him because he's 'one of us' and he's all about grit, determination and (my most disliked word in football) 'passion'.
sky sports love him to an uncomfortable degree
which may well fuel the hatred
I don't mind JT...
and i think he gets a bit of a rough deal on here, which probably upsets him when he reads it (i wonder what his user name is???)...
Galactic3ruption
That would be delightful...
pretending his name is frank? clever.
GS3 has never been to Chelsea
Otherwise... fucking hell
good old thruption
Well I meant in terms of running of from a club you supposedly adore
For a few more quid.
I hate him for other reasons. Mainly his face.
He has got a hateable face hasn't he?
A bit like Kristian Digby.
*brian conley
I sold Brian Conley (sp?)
crab sticks once.
He has his own range of crab sticks?
Well i never.
I applaud this joke
I dislike his playing style..
He's happy to use opponents as a ladder, actively block people (and be proud that he's done it) and he's a master shirt puller at the set piece. Yet when a Chelsea player has (for example) clattered into someone with studs up, he's the first one screaming at the ref with incredulity.
i think if owen does thrive at UTD then it could mean big things for england
a rooney owen partnership at club and international level... could be gold
Highlight of the day thus far:
Andre Arshavin on SSN this morning. Whichever member of the Arsenal press team lined that will surely not be in a job for much longer...
?
...getting a guy who clearly can't speak english to do a piece for SSN
..odd.
"I'm andrearshavin. Keep. It. Here. On. Sky. Sports. I'll. Be. Back" (he may not have said that last bit).
His English is pretty good
I'd say he was fluent enough, he's given long interviews in English on TV before.
huh?
Sunderland linked with Nathaniel Clyne
apparently he's pretty decent.
I'm pretty sure Crouchy is going to turn us down for the bright lights of the King's Road.
Both Sheffield Utd's Kyle's are on the verge of moving to Spurs.
Kyle Naughton should go to Everton.
He's much more likely to get games and Moyes has a track record of working with defenders coming up from the Championship.
Man Utd extend Darron 'Darren' Gibson's contract
He's looked good in the few games that he's played, and - seeing as this season looks to be an interesting transition one - this might be the year he starts really pushing for a first-team place.
Tevez talks some more crap about the same stuff, while Ronaldo states that he would 'never have joined City', and spouts some guff about how he hopes the best for United and thinks that they've done well in signing Michael Owen. Who'd have thought that, post-sale, Ronaldo would seem to be the bigger guy?
*waits for KiK*
Kettering's chairman, professional as ever
released a statement including the lines :
'Kettering Town are delighted to confirm that Guy Branston has finally left the club and joined Burton Albion.'
'We look forward to appointing a captain that respects the players, management and supporters of Kettering Town.'
Also we're looking into taking legal action against him to claim back his increased wages. What a farce, and I wish he'd calm down before making statements.
Well done Imran...
He's always good for a soundbite. Him, Evans and Westley. And that oik at Droylsden as well. Dave Pace is it?
He's not the same bloke that was messing about with Gazza is he?
The very same indeed
and complaining about not being on TV in the cup last year. I do like him and as a chairman he's a million times better than what we've had in the past but sometimes you just wish he'd keep his mouth shut.
Man Utd sign
21 year old Senegalese striker Mame Biram Diouf from Molde. I have no idea if he's any good or not but he'll be on loan at Molde till January.
I wonder which struggling Premiership side he'll be loaned out to towards the end of the season... I'm gonna take a wild guess and say Portsmouth.
The last unknown guy Man Utd signed from Molde turned out OK...
Good point
Magnus Wolff Eikrem?
he looks fantastic, though i know that was a lol
i honestly don't expect a big signing.
can't think of anyone available, that'd be what we need.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1gr6I5W1pM <-new henry
I don't expect any either
I expect there to be a lot of supporting roles for some of the younger players this year... and several positions where Ferguson probably wants players to really fight to make the place their own.
No idea who this Diouf guy is (and I can't get youtube to see R-J's video link). I like that the papers are implying that he's the new Solskjaer because he's a striker from Molde with a funny name that nobody's heard of.
apparently, his goalscoring record is about 71 in 62 games.
which is certainly decent for a twenty one year old.
looks, big strong and good in the air. does nani flips. world player of the year in two years time, easy.
AWESOME
xD
30 in 62 according to f365
The new United arrival has scored 30 league goals from 62 games since signing for Molde, the same club United signed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from, in 2007.
Molde manager Kjell Jonevret is confident Diouf has the potential to succeed at the Theatre of Dreams and was delighted that the player would remain for the remainder of the Norwegian season.
"This is fun for all of us in Molde, fun for Mame and not least for his family in Senegal," he told NG Nett.
Lovely quotes at the end there
He's trying to deflate the market
"We don't need anyone"
Cheeky bid towards the end of the transfer window
Pressure is on the selling team
barcelona
in talks with ibrahimovic.
apparently in exchange for eto, hleb and 40 million. which seems hugely overpriced, so i'd expect the actual figures to be much much less.
decent deal all round methinks.
i've heard nothing about loans
can't really see why they'd bother with them.
Haha
"City, meanwhile, have been appalled by a "fabricated" story that Sheikh Mansour presented their players in Abu Dhabi with a £180,000 watch each."
Why not just give him some hair gel
and an overinflated sense of self-importance, and it'll be just like having John Terry anyway?
Some Serbian bloke has decided he's signed for Chelsea
Matic or something. £4m from Kosice
He's been banging on about that for a couple of days now
Self-announced - I like it.
Sorted my season ticket for next season at Arsenal
More than excited.
Where will you be sitting?
Choose my seat on Monday
But last time I was sat in Blue Quadrant behind the goal. Where do you sit? I've had to split it mind.
Upper tier as well
Block 113, row 30
Upper tier in the green quadrant, almost on the half-way line
http://www.arsenal.com/news/emirates-stadium-news/emirates-stadium-seating-plan
I was in 102, 2nd to last row
I won't be doing that again, the climb was too much. We'll have to arrange pints at half time next season.
My seat is a bit of a climb
The alternative was a seat lower down in the same section, but you get moved to a corner high up for Champions League games, as they are used for sponsor's guests.
But unlike Highbury, you get a pretty good view wherever you sit.
And yes, definitely meet for drinks on match days when it is your turn.
How you're gonna decide who gets to see the big games?
Last time I did it
we tossed a coin for the first choice. My brother got it and chose Spurs, I chose United, he chose Chelsea, I was left with Liverpool.
must cost a few bob
£1060 for the season
£530 for my share.
That wasn't meant to sound so patronising, sorry.
I really doubt Young will be off
I can see O'Neill using either Downing or Milner in the centre, one of them out wide, and Young on the other flank. The talk of Chelsea signing him is as ridiculous as any talk Tottenham signing him. They've just paid £18m for Zhirkov, Joe Cole is apparently set to sign a new contract and Malouda was in terrific form towards the end of last season, all of whom play in the same position.
Downing will play in Barry's role
You know what I mean
I don't think O'Neill is as silly as to move Milner inside. Dopwning could work well in there, mainly due to his lack of pace to be a real winger. And his distribution is very good.
I walked past the Chelsea ground today and got more than slightly annoyed that their first game of the season is at 12:45
So are all games kicking off at 3pm on the first day of the Saturday also a thing of the past?
I've always liked that first and last match of the season being at the same time for everyone in the League.
We are on at 5:15pm on the first day
which is quite annoying. And away to Everton as well :s
It's been like that for the last couple of years at least...
se played sunderland at 1245 a couple of years back...
Another reason for me to despise Sky methinks
I shall add it to the list
Yeah, that annoyed me
I have to get up early to watch Hull. Fucking Hull.
The first seven Chelsea home fixtures
are on telly at stupid times.
Ray Stubbs leaves BBC to present Premier League football on ESPN
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/jul/17/ray-stubbs-joins-espn
brilliant!
Mark Bright + Gary Pallister + Ray Stubbs
= FAIL
What about darts and snooker???????
It's all gone a bit weird down Dorchester way
Eddie Mitchell's successful takeover of Bournemouth means that he's installed one of his MDs (of his building company, I think) as chairman along with his two sons (one of which plays for the club). I think there are three player/managers at the moment as well. I've kind of lost track tbh.
Good news that the Dorch v Weymouth derbies will be played on boxing day and new years day though. Should be good fun.
I'm heading down to Dorch this afternoon actually. There's a friendly tomorrow which I might pop down to. I've not been to a friendly before. Can I expect to pay much?
Usually about half-price or so, I think.
They used to be at Gresley anyway. I've not been to a pre-season game for years though. I stopped when I realised that no-one, including the players, manager, referee and fans actually cared, they were just there for want of something better to do. It was profoundly depressing.
Borehamwood certainly don't charge half price
which is why they get about 47 people through the gate.
They're giving away tickets to their game against Arsenal
through Hendon. Odd.
really?
Last seaosn they tried to charge £10 for the game. I watched it on arsenal tv, even though I live 15 seconds walk from the ground. AND it was just youth players. Not even reserves.
Lee Harding gave us 25 tickets
we're giving them away to people who buy sponsorship/mascot packages.
It costs £27 to sit and watch the Barnet v Arsenal friendly
Outrageous
Who will pay that?!
Not exactly a full-strenth Arsenal team for that game:
Manuel Almunia
Vito Mannone
William Gallas
Johan Djourou
Mikael Silvestre
Thomas Vermaelen
Tomas Rosicky
Andrey Arshavin
Jack Wilshere
Thomas Cruise
Craig Eastmond
Luke Ayling
Conor Henderson
Francis Coquelin
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas
Mark Randall
Emmanuel Frimpong
Gilles Sunu
Sanchez Watt
Jay Simpson
Nacer Barazite
I really hope Silvestre leaves/snaps his cruciates before the season starts
Also - Coquelin will be some player
The new Makelele
allegedly
he's not doing too badly
He's not a Makelele though.
fair
Sorry, that sounded a bit shitty. Wasn't intended, honest!
Yeah, I reckon half price would be about fair
I'll only bother if there's nothing else going on. My brother usually ropes me in to helping him with DIY or something. Best I avoid it if he wants his house to look half decent.
City being linked with Forlan again
don't you dare Hughes, don't you fucking dare.
great kit
http://www.footballshirtculture.com/09/10-kits/getafe-cf-2009-2010-joma-kits.html
I hope I live to see the day
where a club's kit just has a massive pciture of their chairman's face on it.
Lescott will probably........
go. Unfortunately. As an Everton fan it's sad that there is little we can do to keep him and it's a reflection of how we can't compete with anyone these days. In the F.A. Cup final we had nothing to offer at all. Unless a billionairre comes in and buys us then nothing will change - why the hell would someone buy Villa or Man City but not us ????? If I was Lecott, who apparently has no "loyalty" to us really, and wanted to be in a position to "win" things, then the only decision would be to go. I know Moyes has said that he wont be sold but in the end it wont be his decision - it will be Lescott's and the board's. Simple.
ALSO - good to see we are doing are usual in the transfer market i.e. nothing. All I hear and read are stories about buying defenders. Great. Is there any chance of buying an attacking midfielder or another striker?
Indeed.
I know Everton are a bit humstrung financially in terms of having no way to expand the current stadium, so short of building one outside Liverpool, no real way to generate extra cash (incidentally I think this is probably why people buy Villa and Man City but not you - limited opportunities for expansion) but what you do on the resources you have is amazing.
It must be frustrating to support a team constantly in the shadow of another side in the same city with access to money and resources that you don't but nonetheless I think Moyes does an amazing job, Kenwright does what he can and deserves more credit than he gets and your club are in great shape.
Jermaine Beckford's off the transfer list
great news :)
No
Wealdstone (in our division) have a sell on clause. We could do without them getting a windfall from it.
Owen Hargreaves
to return from injury (knackered knees) in September for Man Utd, according to Ferguson.
Fergie skilfully not specifying which September...
Hope he is fit for then though, he's a bloody good player and strikes me as a nice guy
The whole thing was a balls up.
Mainly from the FA and Premier League mind.
beckford taken off transfer list at leeds.
unsure how i feel.
AWW YEAH
YOU GOT MERKED
http://www.epltalk.com/manchester-city-fans-poke-fun-at-united-supporters/9383
Gunter out, Naughton and Walker in
Bit weird.
Okay
Newcastle have installed a transfer embargo on the squad
apparently to stop a players revolt and mass transfer request hand in
because, obviously, this is going to help quell the unrest there is amongst the squad.
also who wants to buy a club thats doing nothing to shed a £65.5m+ wage bill ?
i can't understand why they value eto'o so little
maybe there's more to it,i'm no expert on spanish football
I don't really know how the spanish football psyche works
but could this be a case of a bit of a knee jerk reaction from barcelona (after real's signings) to placate the fans?
Are they going to be looking
at Krkic stepping up to score the goals with Ibrahovic taking up some of the creative slack with Henry's inevitable tail off as his legs fade?
I'd like to see him in the premiership.
If he wants guaranteed first team games every week in this country then west ham seems a good choice
how much say does guardiola have in who comes and goes?
just asking
because you never hear the managers' press releases after deals like this. It's always Laporta or Perez or whoever who come out and say who they've signed/are signing, in contrast to the premiership, where generally the chairmen only get involved if they want to complain or make themselves look good (i.e. Cook, Levy after we sold Berbatov)
although
those tunic tops make them look like Star Trek extras
Hefty?
That's one word for it.
gosh
I'd forgotten that our Nige is actually pretty dashing
so Chelsea didn't make a late bid, or Milan, Or Barca, Or Man Utd.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_city/8149488.stm
ah fuck
...so does Mark Hughes
it would appear...
