I reckon they're a con. It's surely destined to die and has been potted/cut badly, yeah?
doing reasonnably good since one year...
My Mam, the gardening expert, says that they over-crowd the pots. So if you want to keep them alive you need to divide them up between a few pots.
and so won't be the most resilient of plants.
Look at the stems of, for example, thyme bought in supermarket compared to that grown in a garden. The latter is all woody whereas the former is green and fragile.

We only bought it a couple of weeks ago, so perhaps it's too soon to know, but it's already lasted longer than any others I've had.
