Working at McDonalds
Basically, I've spent the last year completely failing to get a job. Admin work? No. Receptionist? Nothing. Waitressing? Nope. Retail? Nuh-uh. This is the point you realise you need to apply to McDonalds. So I'm going to do that. Then if I get rejected I can die without regrets knowing that my life is completely beyond hope.
So basically, I can apply for:
1) Day shift worker - with the totally unworkable wage of £4.85 per hour. It'll no doubt be busy and loud and give me headaches and make me want to cry. Either at central, which I can walk to, but is really big and horrible, or the one that'll cost me £4 for travel each day but is likely to make me want to die a bit less.
2) Day shift Customer Service Assistant - a slightly more workable wage of £5.75 per hour. Involves giving out balloons and doing party stuff. Is probably the least desirable job I've ever come across.
3) Night shift worker - a remarkably awful £5.35 per hour. Won't be especially fun, but I don't do social things, so can probably adjust sleeping patterns. Will be considerably less busy, and no awful noisy children. Probably quite a lot of awful noisy drunk people to be loud and aggressive and make a mess though. Again, at central place with lots of drunk people, or place that costs me a few quid in travel, but is away from town therefore presumably more bearable.
I still wonder whether it looks better to have 'unemployed' or 'McDonalds' on a CV though. Anyhow, if you had to choose, which of them would you go for? Or ideally if you've worked there, which is least likely to result in suicide? I'm leaning towards night-shift, but I have a feel I might be underestimating the stress levels considerably. Kthnx.

aren't they getting something like 2000 applications a day
They have about 14 jobs listed in York
So I wouldn't have thought so...
Unless they're really, really fussy about who they employ
I've been there. They're evidently not.
daily mail but anyway
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1193538/Bank-workers-teachers-2-000-day-applying-McJob-unemployment-surges-200-000.html
Urgh, don't...
I've gotta have some kind of hope to cling to.
weird, i totally got the feeling you were from york
i wouldnt advice night shift mate
^
McDonalds isn't the banker it once was
Oh, this should have read:
I'm completely incapable of making decisions. Do so for me. Kthnx.
2) Most money and I'd rather give out balloons than deal with drunks.
I'm really, really bad with children
And smiling.
2
I'd go nightshift
but saying that commuting to any job makes it twice as crap
I wouldn't have thought it's ideal if watching people eat
means you end up in hospital.
Uh... what?
You mean that Summer thread?
I meant being with people who eat outside means there's inevitably a lot of insects around. This isn't exactly an issue...
When i went for an interview at McDonalds
they made me change my shirt for one of those polo shirts they have (which felt and looked like it hadn't been washed in months), then they gave me some cleaning spray and a cloth and made me wipe down tables. Then they never got back to me.
I like to think i've bounced back now though, if you're under 25 ( i think thats the age limit) try going for an apprenticeship. It's a shit wage but at least it's not McDonalds.
I've tried asking about that kind of stuff
They're definitely not interested in helping me. The only apprenticeship I've seen that I could do was offering I think £60 a week for Monday - Saturday. I'd get more money with JSA...
Did they ask questions or was that it? Did you do it badly or something? I don't get how they choose people, it's like 'can you stand?'... 'can you count?'... okay then.
is the one you travel to
at Clifton Moore? or Monks Cross? or elsewhere
Clifton Moor
There might be a direct bus route somewhere near my house, but it'd probably be quicker to get into town and go from there. Monks Cross doesn't have night shift jobs, and if I was earning that little, the travel costs would be totally painful, though it'd probably be more pleasant than the other two.
Are y0u a student?
No
Guess I'll just apply for all of them then
At least they'll figure I'm desperate enough....
McDonald's is a bit too shit, but...
if you're willing to do that kind of work why not try sandwich and coffee shops first, and other places that aren't generally staffed by spotty virgins?
I think their store manager's get paid around £19k, which isn't so bad, i guess, but it's still McDonalds, innit. I couldn't do it myself, but i guess if there is a career-path there, noddy-supervisor-store manager-regional manager, (there probably isn't) and you could be out of there within a year or two, and your life or independence absolutely depended on it, and you moved away to somewhere where no-one you've ever met would bump into you then it might not be the most unbearable thing in the world. I'm massively unemployed, too, but i couldn't bring myself to do a job that i could've walked into at sixteen.
Have you looked for office jobs and stuff? Even warehouse work. If you're not bothered what you're going to be doing them you might aswell be tucked away in a warehouse somewhere than serving hamburgers.
...
"Admin work? No. Receptionist? Nothing. Waitressing? Nope. Retail? Nuh-uh."
I've applied to all the sandwich/coffee shops
I've applied for all the admin jobs. I can't do warehouse as I can't do any heavy lifting.
Move?
Oh dear God
"What is your proudest accomplishment to date?"
How the hell do I answer that? There really isn't anything at all. Urgh.
Kaka FM anecdote time.
Haha, should I?
I was actually thinking about using a computer game related achievement. Maybe if I get rejected the first time?
I would be sorely tempted to...
Lie
and tell them your a DIS moderator, an example of maturity, organisational skills and being power hungry
i hate these questions...
"what is your biggest achievement of the last 12 months?"
probably drinking a 70cl of vodka and not passing out.
(>'')>
Yeah
The head of Mcdonalds in the uk (not ronald, the other one) wrote an article in the Times a couple of weeks ago, about how great they are as an employer. He said : there's no such thing as a bad job, especially now. Maybe I'll apply.
There definitely is.
I've opened industrial-size tins of corned beef for a living.
:D
Also
You strike me as being very intelligent. Why are you not going to university?
Because I screwed up, dropped out after AS levels
And there aren't many options for getting back in to education when you pass 19. The ones that are there are costly and not something I can do at the moment.
not true
There are lots of ways back into education.
I have a balloon phobia, so I'd go for 1. Actually, I think I'd find something- anything- else to do. Probably escort work.
Have you walked through town knocking on doors yet and asking for work? Unless you come across as utterly objectionable in person, that's the quickest and surest way of getting work at most place (in my experience at least).
I worked with a girl who cried at the sight of balloons.
We thought she was taking the piss, we goaded her with them and she ran off in tears.
i am now crying for her
and me *sob*
They are evil evil things.
Okay, I have -never- seen this on an application form before
"* Have you now or over the last seven days suffered from diarrhoea, vomiting or skin infection?"
Niiice....
Hahaha, best questionaire ever
1 I really enjoy meeting new people.
2 It is very important to be given clear instructions by your manager before doing anything.
3 I treat everyone in the same way.
4 I have never done something I wasnt supposed to do.
5 I am very interested in new developments or products.
6 I rarely lose my temper.
7 When growing up, I never told my parents a lie.
8 Whatever needs doing, I am always willing to lend a hand.
9 It takes a lot to make me angry.
10 I like to tell people what I really think.
Someone give me the right answers plz? It's strongly disagree - disagree - unsure - agree - strongly agree
Is this about right?
1. Strongly agree (ha)
2. Unsure or disagree? I can't work it out
3. Is this about equal opps, or assessing peoples needs? Argh
4. Disagree
5. Agree? (not convincing...)
6. Agree / strongly agree?
7. Disagree
8. Strongly agree
9. Strongly agree
10. Unsure? Again, not sure what they're after
How can they make this so bloody complicated?
faaiiirly obvious. Mostly strongly agree.
apart from that last one. They like to make sure you're paying attention. Maybe agree.
Oh come on, if you answer that to
4,5,7 you'll look stupid. And some of the others too.
4 and 7 I assume are put in to make sure you're not doing just that.
I wouldve thought they want drones.
Who knows... you can read the app though, which is quite an advantage already.
have you tried applying to call centres?
it's pretty shitty, but way better than mcdonalds. and at least you won't have to LOOK at the horrible unwashed masses.
check out call centres for banks and insurance companies.
I can't do phones at all
I've tried training myself to. It didn't work.
I applied for both the nightshift ones, yay!
If I don't get anything from either of those then I'll do the day shift / customer service ones too. I figure night shift has a chance of better people, and the drunk people are probably fairly limited to 12am to 3am - nowhere in York stays open especially late. Although I've just realised that some drunk people probably visit McDonalds just for the toilet facilities - I'm guessing cleaning is heavily involved. At least this is the first time I'm not going to be annoyed if I fail. Well, I will be annoyed, but not at the lack of job, just that lack of hope. Still can't work out if it's worth sacrificing £4 a day (nearly an hours wage) for less drunk people. Hmmm...
And also just realised
I answered the questionnaire differently for each - oops.
i'd say no
my experience of mcdonalds is you are surrounding by arseholes one way or the other, whether its managers, coworkers, customers, drunk customers. i never dealt with people that much as i always worked in the kitchen when i was there anyway.
Was it really that bad?
...
Answer your own question: Every time you've been to McDonalds, did you feel any respect, comradeship or empathy for any of the people working there?
Or were you thinking "Please don't pop that pimple in my nuggets..."?
Last time I went in it was a cute Chinese girl
She was very friendly and looked clean. Not that she was the one making the food, but whatever. I never felt any respect working in a convenience store, so that doesn't bother me especially.
I got respect when I worked in a spar
thanks to my liberal yet firm policies on selling cigarettes and alcohol to underage shoppers
"My GOD you're greasy"
:D
Rejected already
Awesome. I think this is the point where most people with any level of sanity terminate. Oh well, at least now I can say I really have applied for everything.
does it have to be a full time job?
the landlord of my hotel is disatisfied with his friday/weekend girl
Breakfast/waiting, cleaning rooms.
Theres only 6 rooms, hes nice, the guests are nice, I imagine that most of the other guests actuially tidy/clean their bedroom a bit before the official cleaning happens (I do).
It'd need to be about 30 hours to work out really
When I take into account bills / debts that would need to be paid if I had a job. I've never been successful with an application for a cleaning/housekeeping/chambermaid job before anyhow. This is so fucking pathetic it's unreal. I'm obviously academic even if I didn't complete my A Levels, I have relevant admin qualifications. I have recent voluntary work experience. What more can I do, ffs?
...
Move to London. Become hipster creative. Join band.
Then you can bum me out tunefully.
have you considered call centre/telephone canvassing
they always need people because staff turnover is so high, probably no better than mcdonalds except you'd get a seat, and if there is an aqa exam board office near you they never turn anyone down when they are recruiting
I'm really bad on the phone
I can never understand people and I'm not good at communicating, I always freeze up completely.
as long as you dont write that on the application form they wont know
after awhile you might relax and find it easier, I did it when I was 16 and back then I was practically mute. Exam boards are good because they are non profit and have unmovable deadlines so just employ hundreds of temps whenever they need them, if there are any near you might be worth investigating before the next season of exams start
i applied last week
Got a letter back two days later. Didn't even get an interview. The worst thing is I've worked for them before, when I was 16. Kill me.
It's not that bad
Okay, maybe it is
I'm working there at the moment
I mostly work day shifts, but sometimes do the closes that are from 4pm-1.30am(ish), and they suck pretty much, the place shuts at 11, so lots and lots of cleaning
The wage is truly rubbish
But if you can't get anything else, it's bearable
I can't even get that, clearly
I just have no idea what I can do right now. I've been looking for work solidly for a year, and nothing, it's insane. People with criminal convictions manage to get jobs. People who have been fired manage to get jobs. I've never done anything wrong before so why the hell won't anyone give me a chance?
have you tried temp agencies?
that's easier than trying to get a full time job, and you can try lots of different things, and generally get quite good money.
only one would let me join
they've not done anything
you're not trying hard enough.
if you were really desperate you would be applying for jobs that you "can't" do. like call centres.
where do you live? york?
http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/Internet/performJCPSearch.do?action=none
you could apply to at least 50% of the jobs on there. maybe try reviewing your cv and covering letter. good site for that: http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/cv/cvexamples.htm
I'd get fired
which would make getting a job harder. i can't do phones - i've never been able to - i can't understand people when using them, and i freeze up - i've tried before - in my recent work experience they gave me some of that kind of stuff to do. i tried, i failed. i'm applying for EVERY job that i can do, so don't tell me i'm not trying hard enough, okay.
my cv and covering letter is fine, i've had it reviewed dozens of times.
have you had any interviews so far?
what do you do when prospective employers phone you to offer you an interview? usually they'll ask questions over the phone to make sure you're right for their company. you're really missing out on so many opportunities.
Most times they've done that
They just give me a time and date etc. They've never asked questions over the phone before.
I can't help it. I'd rather work in a call centre than clean hotel rooms, for example, but I just can't do the former. I've tried repeatedly to get okay on the phone with no success. I'm still trying to get employment to the best of my ability.
just keep applying then,
i don't think it's really that there's a problem with you, it's just that it's an employer's market, so they have the upper hand in this situation. they can pick and choose who they want, you have to make yourself stand out to them somehow. good luck!
Shouldn't worry about getting fired
It is actually pretty hard to get fired, normally at least three oficial warnings and it is normally for misconduct rather than being bad at the job, if it is a trial probation type thing I think they are obligated to give you references even if they decide not to keep you on

you would say that though
having screened cvs for my manager in a previous job
I would guess that the reason you got rejected was because you didn't have any relevent work experience, (you haven't mentioned having any in this thread - apologies if you do and I'm wrong).
What experience do you need to work in Mcdonalds? probably bugger all. But for their peace of mind they probably want to see you've done some kind of customer facing work before.
I know this is pretty crappy, but have you tried doing unpaid work experience somewhere, eg. a charity shop, just so you can write it on your CV?
I worked for over a year in a customer service role...
and have had recent voluntary work experience.
Sorry then
'tis a mystery.
Is there a hospital in your local area?
Join their admin & clerical bank. It's basically a pool of employees they have that they give work to on an ad-hoc basis. They don't "reject" people per se, they'll take anyone on but whether they give you any work is another issue. I've noticed the ones who are most persistent and basically demand to be given work will get it though.
I mean an NHS hospital
they treat their temp staff really well - you'll get a decent hourly rate to make up for the fact you won't get paid holidays, extra pay for working unsocial hours, plus managers are generally easy going and less demanding as it's the public sector (no "sales targets" or silly pressures like that).
this is a really good idea
ive always preferred night shift work
i think once you get used to working there you will be fine, hope you are anyway.
i start a new job monday. i've just had to buy my first three-piece suit.
are you
a) reliable
b) trustworthy
c) not a slacker (I refrain from using the word hard working)
d) do you have a concience that you follow
e) can you maintain a modicum of a facade of calmness
f) could you refrain from calling people stupid (if they are only slightly stupid, not incredibly idiotic)?
I'd certainly like to think so, sure
Doesn't seem to count an awful lot towards getting a job though.
I worked at McDs when I was 17
It was awful. Easily the toughest job I've had, it can be pretty demanding although they normally get the men to do the tough work in the back and put the girls on the tills so you might be alright.
If I were you I'd go for the one out of town, might cost money to get there but McDonalds in city centres are disgusting places. And considering your requirements I'd go for nightshift too.
The job has such a shit reputation but it is genuinely tough work.
Good luck. You'll have to work with some right mongs.
I worked there when I was younger,
I didn't enjoy it. I'd do it again though if I was desperate for a job. I'd go out of my mind not working.
I've been unemployed since January
do i seem insane? I feel insane.
Id like to be unemployed for a bit I think
maybe when autumn hits I'll take the winter off
my sister used to work in McDonalds
You're allowed to not show up for a shift TEN TIMES before they sack you.
Do a course.
Do any bloody course. Do the £60 a week thing.
Basically if you have that attitude of long term goals not being worth anything and are trying to remedy it with things like working at McDonalds you will be doing crappy jobs like that for the rest of your life.
You already know you hate it. So why are you doing it?
You're like 19/20 right? So if you started a course in something you're half interested in you'd be done by about 22 maximum. That's really not that old.
Then you can go to employers in fields that you're actually interested in and tell them to look at the interest you've shown already. So many people I know have got decent jobs before their course has even finished and were able to leave halfway through, because it proves to employers you actually give a shit.
Sorry to go all life-coach here but it's absolutely true. You're answering your question.
^
Money's important in the short-term I guess, but you need to look further than that. While you might've screwed up at your AS levels, you don't get one shot at it. Go and do a course at your college in something/anything you're interested in our passionate about, maybe get EMA if you're in that wage-band, and then follow a career path or do what you want to do, rather than resorting to literally the worst possible conclusion just to fill your wallet.
I couldn't do it financially
I need to fill my wallet now so that I can get back into academic education when I get the chance to. I'm not going to take a vocational course for the sake of it, especially when I couldn't possibly get the money for one. Again, please stop assuming that I'm stupid. It's kind of irritating.
Where did I say you're stupid?
You've asked for advice on which crap job to choose from, and I don't think you should go for any of them. If you don't want an opinion, don't ask for it, it's kind of irritating.
Holy christ
People are taking a bunch of time out to help your can't-get-hired-by-Macdonalds ass, and you're being shitty to them? You could always try blowing dogs for pennies...
^
Okay, I just wanted to try out some 'thising'.
I can't afford to do a course
I will be going back into education eventually, but because of the switch over in the A Levels I can't take the exams until 2011 - in the meantime I need to be able to get enough money so I can survive whilst I'm studying - that means I need a full time job. I'm not a complete moron, but thanks for assuming.
Hmm
I'm not sure about this suggestion, but have you considered registering for an NHS nursing bank? Very very flexible, not bad pay (if I remember right), perfect for doing courses at the same time.
Well sounds like you know what to do
If A-levels are what you really, really want then just take the crappy McJob and put up with it for a while.
But in my experience, it makes a lot of sense if you've got something practical (like an actual profession) in mind before you do something like that. It's no good doing an A-level in interpretive dance or something then wondering why the job offers don't come flooding in.
It doesn't even have to be a job you're madly passionate about. Just something you know you can put up with everyday. Sounds like you're quite intelligent but kind of suffer from a lack of direction or something at times so it's really important to make a realistic target and just stick to it. Even if it's kind of boring. But otherwise you will go absolutely nowhere.
Probably getting out of York at the first opportunity wouldn't hurt either.
See: rejection within minutes of applying
Wtf? I'd continue my Eng Lit, Politics & History A Levels and then go do History at uni. I have top grades in all three at AS already, it won't exactly be challenging. I'm perfectly academic...
And that will have to wait until uni, obviously I have absolute no money (well, £40 a week) and so unless I'd like to be homeless, not a sensible idea.
You asked if it's better to have "unemployed" or "McDonalds" on a CV
Clearly it's better to have McDonalds, for one it shows that you have the motivation to stick with a clearly shitty job when you need to. Definitely shows sticking power, and it does win loads of awards for being a good place to work. What I'm saying is, even though it's not a great place to work, it's seen by the business world as a good employer.
Well whichever you want to be honest?
If money is your sole motivation, MTFU and do the day shift customer assistance. If not and you want to strike a balance then do night shift. I used to work night shifts in a hospital, they were quite tedious but at least payed a way. You feel tired for the first couple of shifts but after that your body clock adjusts and it's fine. Wouldn't you be able to get double time/time and a half for it as well?
Either way, if you're unemployed and want a job, this isn't the time to be picky.
I await your plethora of excuses.
THIS THREAD IS SIX DAYS OLD
IF YOU'D READ IT YOU'D SEE THAT IT'S ALREADY CONCLUDED AND YOUR POSTING IN IT IS CONTRIBUTING NOTHING OTHER THAN CLOGGING UP THE BOARDS.
FFS. Is reading really that difficult? People seem to have remarkable issues with it on this place.
lol.
i think you'd be great at customer service lucy.
I can't begin to fathom why they didn't hire you.
I think you should go for it
It's paid work, and that's always going to look better than long periods of unemployment.
The night shoft option sounds like the most bearable, but i don't know if that would mess up sleeping patterns or anything?
*shift!
LOL
"Remarkable issues"
Like not being able to make basic decisions such as whether to apply for a job when you are unemployed and can't get anything else?
Man the fuck up!
Right, apart from I made the decision within minutes of posting the thread
And was deciding what job in particular to apply for not WHETHER to apply. Nice comprehension skills, moron.
Hmm
"I still wonder whether it looks better to have 'unemployed' or 'McDonalds' on a CV though"
Sounds like indecision to me.
Anyway Ronald, heard from them yet?
No, because I'd apply anyhow
I suspect some employers might act snobbishly towards it, but that statement didn't and wouldn't have impact on applying.
ARBEIT MACHT FRIES
She'd be great at clearing out troublemakers
THAT MCCHICKEN SANDWICH BOX IS SIX MINUTES OLD
IF YOU'D LOOKED AT IT YOU'D SEE THAT IT'S CONTENTS HAVE ALREADY BEEN CONSUMED AND YOUR CONTINUED PRESENCE IS CONTRIBUTING NOTHING OTHER THAN CLOGGING UP THE RESTAURANT.
"But I'm on my break."
"Oh yeah, GREAT reply. What I'm saying is FACT. FACT FACT FACT. YOU CAN'T ARGUE."
I'm going to stop now.
Have you considered
a career in the armed forces?
be the best.
but then she might have to speak to people through walkie talkies
which are kind of like phones and she "can't" talk on phones!!!!!
it is really hard for some people.
Simple solution to that...........
17.04 Text message received from Private PocketMouse:
'O, HAI! WE R UNDR ATTK, PLS SND RNFRCMNTS. KTHXBAI!'
Haha
Congratulations good sir, that was very amusing :)
Quite immature of you, i must say.
Lots of people have social phobias, or/and speech problems.
This strikes me as the sort of remark you'd probably get on your high horse about were it anyone else mocking.
You're SUCH a poo-poo head.
I went to cadets when I was younger
I was really, really scared of it all. We had a week somewhere south and I got yelled at cause I marched a bit wrong. Then I cried and pretended I had a migraine. I don't think anyone believed that, cause they wouldn't let me have tablets. I'm also remarkably unfit. But that's less of a concern than the whole trembling/crying thing. I'm definitely not armed forces material.
If I was skilled at that kind of thing
being in the air force would probably be pretty cool though.
I start at my McDonalds on Sunday.
For all it's failures, it's still £4.80 an hour more than I'm on now.
good luck
I hope your first customer is more polite than mine was when I worked there when I was 16.
Me: Sorry for the delay, it's my first day...
First customer: Well maybe if you'd tried harder at school, you wouldn't be here.
ha ha, what a fucking cunt.
Lucky me.
I got to spend the day in the kitchens, meaning I didn't have to deal with any rude or mean people. Score.
I did it
the pay is quite good but thats just about the only positive
The people that worked there were morons. The work is hard, repetitive and unrewarding, the customers are beyond rude and to top it all off you have to wear a vomit untising uniform (with no pockets so you dont knick the cash)
I worked at McDonalds once when i was at college
It was very very shit. It was a franchise shop. Ran by the king of evil in the Dudley area. Even the other staff think they think they are better than you. I managed to move out of the kitchen to the 'lobby' where i was called 'gay' by all the macho boys in the 'kitchen'. Out on the lobby you could attack the customers face on, wiping ketchup over their D&G jeans but also giving your mates free food!
"you're a cunt"
"well you eat here?"
It's the McDonalds Moto! I think i was on 4.25 or soemthing when i started back in the day. That wouldnt buy you a pint these days!
Without wishing to sound like "Corporate Man"
...it sounds like you do really need to work on your interpersonal skills. When I was 18 I was properly shy. Now at twice that age I am impossible to shut up.
Continue avoiding social situations and this problem will only get worse. Throw yourself into them... I've seen enough above to know you've got the intelligence to sustain good conversation - drop the defeatism and get on with it.
Oh
and it will take time. But you'll get there.
if you were a fella i would
advise you to tap up the local hospital for porter work. Maybe do it for admin work like someone else suggested.
i did it at university and to this day it was one of the best jobs i ever had. pay was ok, shift work so you could do days, evenings and nights.
met some lovely people (other porters) the nurses gave you a bit of stick but thats because they were at the bottom of their food chain and if you dont mind putting bodies in the morgue at 6am sat morning after being on the hit n miss you couldnt go far wrong.
i think your responses show why you're still unemployed. you come across as a moaning idiot.
so you'd work in mcdonalds, where you'd be (or should be) communicating with customers, yet you wouldnt consider a phone job which would be less demanding and would take the face to face aspect out?
then every response from people trying to help is 'im not stupid, moron.'
you obviously are.
good luck finding a job!
Oh God why did I apply for this!
I can feel my soul dying a little bit each shift...
