I've been invited to a work colleague's wedding.

poptimusgrime [Edit] [Delete] 10 replies 22:54, 1 July '09

Not just the evening reception, but the whole ceremony gubbins too. And his stag do of paint-balling in the afternoon and drinking in the evening. And I have no idea why.

I get on well enough with the guy and I’ve been working with him for about a year and a half, or something like that, and it’s quite nice that I’ve been invited… But it’s not like we’re THE BEST OF FRIENDS. He invited everyone in our office, but only me and another woman (who he’s known for years and years and who is going out with one of his best friends) to the ceremony. Whenever we talk in work, it’s always about the same kind of thing: bit of politics, bit of history. I’ve never even associated with him outside work. He’s old as well, like 55, and this is his third marriage, so it’s not like it’s a big event, really. How long will this last before he cheats on the new wife?

It’s just all very odd and a bit tricky to get out of. I would’ve gone to the evening reception, if I was invited to that, but I’m not so sure about the whole thing. He gave me the invitation a week ago, so I don’t know if it’s too late to suddenly say “Oh, turns out I can’t make it for the ceremony”. I was only invited to the stag thing today and didn’t say yes but “I’ll check my diary and see if I can make that”, so that I can think of an excuse… i.e. Get you lot to give me a suitable excuse.

Anyone got an overly familiar workmate? Anyone been to a workmate’s wedding?

Shit, I need a date to this thing too. Anyone want to be my date?

    • Just so he can kill me?

      What a masterplan.

  • You're probably right.

I was going to go to the reception, I guess if I say "I'm not going to the ceremony, just the reception" he'll be cool with that.

Now to deal with the stag do and find a date...

  • must be a scottish thing

i remember my cousin, who works in edinburgh, talking about a couple of his coworkers basically seeing folk in work as totally normal to assume drinks/stag dos/whatever with. he was getting a bit narked as a couple of them were trying to invite themselves to his stag do - not really on

dunno though, stag do of a 55 y/o could be really depressing or it could be hilarious

    • Two examples, yeah that totally makes it a Scottish thing.

I think it's just a stupid thing. I told my dad about it and he said "But you don't even *know* him, really."

I think the stag do would be depressing, definitely. It was arranged by his 60 year old brother and the other two people I know who are going to it - this guy's best friends who he also works with - are in their 50s too. I wouldn't be surprised if I was the only person under the age of 35 to be there. There will probably be a stripper at the evening bit. :/

Luckily, it's "my friend's birthday that weekend and we're doing something on the Friday night - I'm afraid I'll have to give your stag do, on Saturday, a miss. Soz!"

I GET TO GO TO A WEDDING IN RIO. i've never actually met the people, but still, i'll bet rio wedding >>> scotland wedding

    • You lucky bastard!

A wedding anywhere else >>> a wedding in Scotland. Well, Scottish weddings can be pretty fun, I guess, but a more exotic location + good times is way better. I want to go to one of those weddings that's on a cliff in Mexico or something.

      • yesterday i visited the place where my parents got married

in a wee tiny village on the west coast near mallaig... the beaches round there are properly amazing, turquoise sea and white sand and pretty deserted, and the sun was blazing so it was actually like being somewhere tropical. if you could rely on the weather it'd be a great place to get married, but i guess the reason why it's so deserted is cos it's only like that about three days a year
